EGR Issue/94 Safari

I replaced the EGR valve a few months ago. Recently the dreaded "check engine light" came on and the engine began running rough. The code was 32 EGR and now there is a very strong gas smell. Solutions?

Fortunately I'm not dependent on the van right now. Thanks for any ideas.

Well I have to ask.... Did you buy a AC-Delco part? If not, I would suspect the EGR valve again.

Are you getting any other codes?

I didn't buy an AC-Delco part and I didn't have any other codes.

I managed to remove the valve today (my hands are too freaking big). There was a small carbon deposit that had forced the valve to stick. I removed the carbon and the valve appeared to function as its supposed to. I reinstalled it and the van is running fine now. I wonder what caused that carbon build up.

Thanks for the help.

The 4.3 engine is notorious for carbon build up particulary if you use it for short trips mostly, then when you do a high speed long run the carbon will break loose fouling the EGR. Two things you can do 1: get a screened gasket for the EGR valve to catch the carbon particles, I got mine at NAPA, and 2: run a good brand of 87 octane gas with detegents. I swear by Chevron or Texaco with the additative Techron, keeps mine clean. You can also buy Techron at the auto parts store as an additative to your fuel. Two tankfulls will make a notiable difference.

Screened gasket eh? That sounds like a good idea. I don't have many Chevron or Texaco stations nearby but I'll look around.
