My GT will start up then while driving my tach will drop to 0 and the low trac light will come on and then my engine will die and sometimes it will start right up other times I will have to sit and wait for 5 - 10 minutes, there have been a few times that i go to start it again and I have no power almost like the battery is dead?...had a buddy tell me to go to AutoZone and have them scan it, autozone scanned it and says its my crankshaft positioning sensor.....took it to the college automotive department talked to the instructor there he says it could be my ignition switch says that 98 prix's are known to have ignition switch problems?? i dont know what the hell the problem is happens about every time i drive anywhere? help please!?!

Re: 98 Grand Prix GT 3.8L stalls and wont start??
It is true about ignition switch issues but your symptoms "tach will drop to 0 and the low trac light will come on" appears to be consistent with a flaky crank position sensor. Go with what the scanner says at face value. You're fortunate you even got a DTC code. Most crank sensor problems don't even generate DTCs. If it is a situation where the engine does not crank due to a battery or charging system problem then get the battery and charging system tested. Make sure the cables and terminals at the battery are clean, tight and free of corrosion.
We have a tech procedure for CKPS replacement at our Tips & Maintenance forum.
