94 cougar xr7 with 4.7 running problems

Hi all

I just bought this car about a month ago the guy that owned it was driving it and it devopled a stumbling problem so he parked it. It has been setting for 3 years so I bought it for $100. it does have a stumbling problem if you step on it medium to hard but if u take it easy it is ok. then about a week ago i ran it low on gas just made it to the gas station put gas in and now every once in a while and getting more ferquent when u step on it it gets to about 2500 to 3000 and real bogs out and it will not pick up speed you let up and try again it might be fine or if u shut the car off then it might be ok or it might not be. the check enging light is on need to get codes out but i have been through school for auto repaire and have worked in the feild for 10 years. but this doent act like a computer problem becouse it does it one time then not the next
