where to get racing stripe decals?

Hi Guys

i'm currently working on a AMT concept camaro, and like everyone else, i'd like to put the black racing stripes on it and make it seem closer to the Transformers bumblebee.

I searched and noticed that some used the decals from a mustang kit, but i dont have that kit.

is there anywhere that i can get some of these black stripes online? Thanks!

Gary

Fred Cady decals which are available through E-bay.

Or you could mask off the yellow and spray them.

Or you can just buy a sheet of black decal film. Cut them as wide or as narrow as you want, and apply like normal decals.

Re: where to get racing stripe decals?

When I made my Viper and my Shelby throwback Mustang, I just masked and sprayed. If you've done a good masking, it looks even better than decals. Pictures provided below:

Very nice, Deltableh. How did you avoid getting a 3-D edge along the line of demarcation? If it's there, it sure doesn't show in your pix.

Re: where to get racing stripe decals?

There is an edge on both, more predominant on the Mustang, though, as that was my first masking job. I suppose you can always gently sand the line down, if it bothers you, but on the Viper, mist coats just gave me great coverage. Here are some progress pictures, so you can see how it went down.

Black went down first as primer:

Then a silver basecoat:

Finally, the red and the clear:

I chose a front view so any really bad masking lines would be noticeable. I guess if you go with mist coats rather than heavy, you'll be fine. I've done stripes both ways. The Mustang, I masked off everything but the stripes, and shot blue over silver. On the Viper, I just masked off the stripes, and shot the red over silver. The second way gave me less lineage.

personally I believe that the best thing is to paint these lines ... a good masking job and presto!

Re: where to get racing stripe decals?

Hmmm. I've just color-coated a Cunningham, probably the first significant car to have big racing stripes. The car is white; the stripes will be dark blue. I was planning on using the kit maker's decals for the stripes, but after seeing your fine work I'm thinking about painting them. Any suggestions?

Re: where to get racing stripe decals?

Mask and mask well. Use toothpicks to really make sure the tape is fully pushed down. I once was shooting blue stripes on a white SRT-10 convertible body, and they came out great, except at the back, where I had leaks and dribbles. As long as you're careful with your masking job, you should be fine. If you're really paranoid however, I have heard some people say that after masking, throw a light coat of clear over the car to seal up the masking; that'll hopefully prevent leaks. Just remember, though, the more layers of paint you put down, the more prevalent any masking lines will be, though I'm sure those can be sanded down if one is careful enough.
