purchasing 2002 Explorer XLS

I am looking to buy a 2002 Explorer XLS that appears in good shape and has approx 66k miles. I know nothing about cars as you can tell from my nic. So can anyone please tell me what i should look out for and if this year and model is safe? I am disabled and need a reliable car to for distance driving as well as city driving. I don't do much driving so gas prices is not an issue. I do however tend to drive like a maniac, ie, lead foot and lane changer on freeway!

I would be most grateful for any suggestions or hints! Thank you!!

thank you pang. But I am buying from private owner who just wants the amount equal to his loan balance. He had it as company car, then bought it from company for his girlfriend and they are moving to cold weather climate.
He said when co. owned he had it taken in all the time b/c it was free. I think he bought from co last nov.
