Water temp gauge problem '88 GT

Temp water temp gauge works when switch is off ,when turned on ,the needle goes all the way to the bottom,I have another battery voltage water temp gauge cluster,I am going to try that 1st.Has anyone had this problem?Thanks

The CTS or Coolant Temp Sensor should be in the intake manifold.
