Will start but will not run

1991 Plymouth Laser 2L (no turbo) will start but will not run, the fule pump only has power while the ing key is turned.And the test plug on the fire wall behind the battery will not power the fuel pump ? The car will only run if I hot wire the Fuel pump, any help would be grate.

Hmm did you check all the fuses? Did you try swapping out the fuel pump relay? When you first turn the key to the on position do you hear the fuel pump turn on for a couple seconds? Obviously your fuel pump is working. If worse comes to worse you can always rewire the fuel pump with bigger gauge wire. It's mostly done for performance reasons, but it would work in your case as well and you will get constant battery voltage to the fuel pump rather than 9 or 10 volts with that factory gauge wire.

Thanks TalonEclipse GSX for the post,But all the fuses look good allthough I did not find one marked fuel pump. The parts store can not find a fuel pump relay in there books for this car so there may not be one ? And no the Fuel pump does not come on with the key in the run position only the crank position. I have been told it could be a bad Ing switch,?

There is a relay for the fuel pump behind the radio on the floor near the ECU.

Yep. It is also called an MFI relay, which is probably why the parts store couldn't find it. Chances are this is your problem. Speaking of, now that I think about it, my fuel pump doesn't prime either when i turn the ignition to the on position. I just never really gave it much thought since it starts up every time, due to the fuel pump rewire.

The fuel pump actually should only come on when the engine is cranking over. Having the key in the "on" position doesn't turn the pump on. This is for a 1G at least. Not sure about 2G's...

When I turn the key to the on position in my car I can hear the fuel pump prime. But I have a 2g

mine doesn't prime...but right now, mine wont start either because i have no fuel... but for the record, mine never did prime anyway

I'm used to the fuel pump priming with the key on because I mostly work on Fords and Chevys. I checked on both of my cars and neither the 1g nor the 2g would prime with the key on before startup. Go figure.

Mine runs for 1-2 seconds to prime the fuel lines.
