country of origin

hi guys,

I live in canada and am looking to import a 2004/5 GLI from the US.

how can i find out where the car was made? is there a code or letter in the VIN?? the reason I ask is that duty and import fees are less if the vehcile is made in the US or Mexico.

any tips?

thanks

Re: country of origin

It's not going to be US built. All the jettas after 1994 are made in mexico. So your's is mexican.

The first number or letter is the indication of what country the vehicle was made in.

1 = US
3 = Mexico
9 = Brazil
W = Germany

W is not going to apply to Jetta. It will be for passat touareg and other vehicles. 9 is for certain year golfs and GTIs. 3 is going to be for just about every jetta out there. 1 is for old old cars like the rabbit pick up.
