Switch tank problem. 95 F150

Hi all we have a wierd problem that started today. My hubby is having problems with his tanks. He switched tanks and the truck idled fine but as soon as he puts it in gear it dies. He goes back to the empty tank and it will go in gear. It will idle and rev but dies when put in gear. Does anyone know what the problem is? Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks.

in some of the older ford truck they had 2 fuel pumps, one in each tank check the pump in the bad tank. there are also strainers in each tank make sure they are clean and clear in the bad tank.

I've got the 1988 1/2 F150 that has similar problems. The switch on the dash tells which tank pump to work, but there's a mechanical switch in the fuel lines that either allows the flow of fuel or not. It's mounted to the frame under the drivers butt. If you get to messing with this, it looks like the bottom is supposed to screw off, DON"T UNSREW IT. I thought it looked like an old style fuel filter, so I took it apart to cleean it, then had to buy a new one, because it wouldn't stop leaking.
There's like a diaphragm inside, the top section. If the fuel is coming from the rear tank it gets pushed in one position, and when coming from the front tank it's in the other. I have found that my rear tank pump works great, but my front tank pump is not strong enough to switch it all the way in the proper position. BTW mine is fuel injected and has 3 pumps.
You may have a similar problem. After you switch from the good one to the bad one, your high-pressure pump (right about under the drivers left foot) will use the fuel left in the line to keep the truck running. Then it runs out of fuel because the switch either isn't all the way on or the pump from that tank isn't good enough.
I'm sure mine is the pump, because I put a little air pressure to the inline switch to make sure it was in the proper position, had someone crank it over for me and got a drizzle out the other side.
