Weird problem when filling the tank

I have a 94 Metro, 3 cyl, automatic.

When I go to fill up the tank with gasoline, the auto-shut-off thing on the pump handle will engage almost immediately after I begin pumping gas and gasoline will splash out and down the side of the car! The only way I've found to fill it up is to go very, VERY VERY slowly as I do (about as low as the pump handle will allow). I can do this - but it sure does take a while and is a pain in the wrist (hee, hee).

Is this normal? Is there a clog in my filler-up-hose? Is something kinked? Any Geo-genius out there got a solution for this one?

Maybe a situation like DOCTORBILL had, and there is a piece of hose or something stuck down in the filler neck? Sounds like a clog in the filler neck.

Mine did that after a shop replaced fuel pump. What happened was they kinked the little vent hose that runs along side the big filler hose. Once unkinked it worked ok.

Is the kink issue a fairly easy/simple problem to get to or fix? I've not had time to look it over yet.

If it IS something inside the filler tube (an obstruction) how do you go about safely getting it out of there?

Removing the filler tube is rather easy to do. Up here in the north, where salt is used on the roads, the filler tube rusts from the salt being kicked up by the left rear tire. I have had to replace two of these in two different metros. Take it off and take a look at it. Also check the flexible part that goes from the metal filler tube to the gas tank itself.

Being the "Busy Body" that I am, I have to interject what my experience was
with "Stuff" in my gas filler tube...

I tried to siphon out my gas tank when I replaced my Fuel Pump and could not
get a tube to go down the Gas Filler Port.

Here was why...





Some Bozo Brained, Bone Headed Moron had siphoned out gas, got the GARDEN HOSE
stuck in the Filler Tube and cut it off and left it there!

The garden hose was extremely HARD from age and being soaked in Gasoline for years.
He was lucky the plastic wasn't soluble in the Gasoline or he'd have had a plugged fuel pump
and probably his Throttle Body, Fuel Regulator and Injector would have been ruined.

You might find ANYTHING in there!

A kid's toy car, a rock, some hose, maybe a dessicated, gasoline preserved mouse!

Look at the photos - the Filler Hose and Air Vent Hose are shown.

Three bolts in the Gas Filler Port, a couple holding the Hose on - also the Air
Vent Hose, a clamp - and it is off.

The part that bolts into the Gas Filler Port is at the lower right of the photos.

Drain the tank or use gas until the tank is empty - else you'll have gasoline all
over everything...!

If you need a replacement for the large rubber hose connection - can someone reading
these Posts help in that regard?
