Weight on the roof question.

How much weight can the roof of the car take? It's a 1990 Delta 88 Royal Brougham.

Ok, this is a little odd I guess...but here goes.

It's got that imitation leather crap on top and it's looking really bad. All the cats around seem to love it, lol.
In my second job I make Chain Maille armor and was thinking about making a sheet for the top.

This is what it looks like, from a piece I've done before. It's the first picture.

Hopefully that link works. Anyway, finished it will be about 200lbs. You think the roof can take it?

Re: Weight on the roof question.

im not sure about the 90 delta, but i know when i tryed walking on top of my 92 royale to get to the garage roof(couldn't find the ladder ), my weight caused the metal to sink(popped right back out fortunatly for me). i have to admit the chainmail would look pretty cool... as for weight, i don't know man...

you could always test and see how much it can hold. not all at once just little bits at a time then see if it bows... keep us updated! Im interested to see if it works out

Re: Weight on the roof question.

I put up a few sandbags, but it started to pop before it even got to 100lbs, so I don't guess I'll be using maille to cover the top...but I'll use it for trim. I'm working on a cover for where the trunk key used to be before someone got in it with a crowbar...and I'll make covers for the rear view mirrors. Maybe even take off the rubber thing going down the side and put a strip down the side...hmmm...I'll post pictures when I'm finished. (this may take a while though...)

Re: Weight on the roof question.

You have to think about weigh distribution though. If the mail is layed out over the entire roof, I would think it would hold. Its not like you're going to roll it up in a ball and put it in the middle of the roof...Its worth a shot I think and if it doesn't work, you have a huge piece of chain mail.

Re: Weight on the roof question.

i could imagine that this would lower your fuel economy being as heavy as it is. although the mighty oldsmobile hasn't really been the best in the fuel economy category to begin with.

Re: Weight on the roof question.

True on the MPG...I'm only getting about 20 something as it is, and I drive about 45 min. to work (one way) also...so I guess the chain maille roof is out unless I can find something very light. But I'll work on some other stuff. I put in about $60 a week in gas. I've got about half the chain ready, but I'll just make a few shirts out of it. I'll make enough from the shirts to redo the exhaust on the car...I think I'll upgrade to a high flow... maybe even some new headers...if I can find someone that will do them.
