1995 Villager Timing Problems

I have a 1995 Mercury Villager. The Timing belt broke at 118,000. I replaced the belt. I set up crank and cam to marks on belt. Car will not start and seems to be running free. I noticed that the instructions state that the crank is set at 5 o'clock postion, the left cam at 2 o'clock position and the right at 10 o'clock position. However, when I install the belt the marks on the belt do not align with the belt marks. I removed the belt and aligned cams to belt marks. Car will not start. Did I damage the engine? Engine in supposed to be noninterference. Can you help?

no. forget about the 10 or 2 O'clock stuff.......each cam and crank has a small dimple on it that you have to align with a notch on the timing covers....you take the belt and you should have THREE markings....there should be TWO markings relatively close to each other and a third further away from the other two...the two that are close are for the cams and they should align from there....

hi there the timing belt has three marks put one mark onthe right cam mark count 40 teeth and there should be the other mark that goes on the left cam mark .then count 43 teeth and there is the other mark for the crank dot theres no way to get it wrong.
