Transmission issues. Swap?

My 94 4x4 w/22re and 5 speed pops out of first when i try to take off as I mentioned in another thread. I replaced the spacer and bushing in the shifter and still have the same problem so I'm considering replacing the tranny since it's not that big a deal. But I really think for the type of driving I do that I'd really like to have an automatic. Welding work is not a problem. Can anyone clue me in on what else might be required, and recommend the proper tranny to look for? This is a good opportunity to do something cool.

Re: Transmission issues. Swap?

For starters you'll need the tranny AND T-CASE and the tranny's ECM and harness. Maybe the engine ECM also. And an aftermarket cooler of course. Best bet would be to find a truck of the same year and strip what you need off it. Another year would be next best.

Re: Transmission issues. Swap?

Thanks man. That is WAY more work than just swapping another original tranny. I didn't realize the autos had their own computer.

Yeah, they do.

Nothing's simple nowadays.

Good luck

Re: Transmission issues. Swap?

Can you help me determine which tranny I have? It's in a 94 reg cab 4x4 with a 22re and a 5 speed. I just found a used W56 with a transfer case I'll buy if it will fit. then I'll have another transfer case.
