Grinding Sound

Hi all, 03 Accord, V6 Auto, 74k mi. I'm getting a grinding sound from the left front of the car when on the brakes nearly at a stop. It sounds like metal to metal. I had it apart yesterday, all brakes are at 85% left on pads, front rotors have less than 8k miles. I feel it in the pedal but no pulsating. The car stops just fine. Does the cv drive shaft sound like this when it is going bad?
Thanks,
Ateve

Re: Grinding Sound

I guess you checked all the pads, inboard and outboard?

CV shaft won't do this....a bad hub bearing COULD, but would usually rumble when driving too....

A couple of odd things I've seen that closely imitated metal on metal grind...believe it or not, slightly cupped tires on a FWD will do that when braking....damn near went nuts trying to find an identical noise on a Cavalier once, in desperation I rotated the tires, and the sound/feeling was gone...

I've had a couple of customer cars have this complaint, which I verified and it felt for all the world as if they had metal grinding just as you came to a stop...and I didn't figure it out until several months to a year went by and I realized the pads were not wearing one BIT...for some reason the pads were too hard to grab the rotor firmly and the resulting chatter feels like a grind when it happens...replaced the pads with standard semi-mets that we used and all was fine...

Sometimes a sticking/dragging caliper will make sensations like that if it's not applying both pads equally...but in this case you'll see one pad looks like new while the other is worn much more...and many times excessive brake dust on one wheel as opposed to the other...

Re: Grinding Sound

Since you did specify that it's just as it comes to a stop, I'd be looking at the tires, like I said with the Cavalier, and clean the rotors...anything that might have got on them can make the brakes chatter as they try to come to a "hold" position and stop the rotor...the resulting chattering grunt feels just like grinding...
