That's a toss up....
Could be a bad keypad, a bad keyless module, four dead lock actuators or fuse (if their fused).

Does the remote work? Do the locks work from the inside buttons? Are all your fuses good? I don't have my manual handy to say which fuses to look at.

The car didnt have a remote when I bout it. So I got a remote and tried to program it but wast succesful. someone told me to program it you have to turn the switch back and foward for about ten second and the car would lock and unlock, and to program the remote when it locks you press unlock onthe remote but that didnt work.The inside lock buttons do work. i believe all the fuses are good. Boy the way do you no any other way to program the remote.

Re: key pad on 96 tc

With the doors unlocked, keys in your hand, pressing 7/8 9/0 simultaneously will lock all the doors. If not, there a problem with the keypad or keyless module.

'Someone' told you a piece of the process for later models, not your 1996.
For the 1996 and many others, you'll need the permanent factory code in order to access programming mode.

The permanent factory code 'sticker' is always pasted to the right-side trunk support arm. Lots of folks remove that sticker since it visually tells how to get into the car.

You can also get the code number by removing the drivers door paneling and looking at the keyless module. The code number is printed to the outside of the box.

After you've found the permanent code;
Use the 'search' button for 'keyless programming' and read the responses pertinent to 1997 and down.

Re: key pad on 96 tc

Hey Stan.. hope you're well

One of us is getting old.... or maybe it's the stress, or just the glasses

I was pretty sure BigC said his keypad was dead, AND he can't program that remote. I didn't see that he already has the factory code, my bad.

I'm sticking to what I said though, bad keypad or module... here's why;
BigC say's he presses the last two buttons (7/8 9/0) and all that happens is the interior lights come on, no locking the doors... actually that sounds more like a bad module now that I'm putting more words into it.

Even though the proper factory code is required to enter programming mode, we're not at that point yet if the keypad/ keyless module wont accept a code number.

Here's the 1994 ~ 97 Procedure:

Lincoln Remote Programming Procedure. (there is no other way for these years)

Assuming you have the correct model remote, and verified the batteries have sufficient power.....
  • Enter 5-digit permanent entry code into the keyless entry keypad.
  • Within 5 seconds of pressing last button of code, press the 1/2 button. All doors will lock then unlock to confirm programming mode.
  • Press any button on 1st transmitter within 5 seconds of pressing the 1/2 button. Locks [may] cycle to indicate successful programming.
  • Press any button on 2nd transmitter (up to 4 transmitters total possible) within 5 seconds of previous transmitter (if keypad light goes out before all transmitters are programmed, the process must be repeated).
  • Press the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons simultaneously on keypad to exit program mode.

"One of us is getting old.... or maybe it's the stress, or just the glasses"

Not sure just how old you are but I think my kids are about your age...that means I'm the one getting old - and I don't deny it, it just doesn't seem possible I'm this age.

Stress? That must be you. I'm surely not stressed...well, a little bit, maybe, becausef I'm getting old.

Poor eyes. Yep, that belongs to me. Diabetes has not helped my 'old age' eyes in the least. They change so much and so quickly, the optomitrist can't keep up and I can't afford to change glasses that often. I probably 'see' a lot of things wrong on here.

I wish they would give one more than 5 seconds on these things. When a person is old, has poor eyesight and their hands shake badly, it is hard to do some of these things in 5 seconds. Don't those people at Ford know anything? Many, many of those who drive towncars are "elderly".
