Whenever the control on the heat-AC go on the fritz the system goes to defrost by default because that is a safety related issue. The control for the heatiing and AC is vacuum operated. When you lose the vacuum it reverts to this setting. Other than checking vacuum lines I am at a loss to help you with this problem.
