Tranny and transfer case life
I was looking around about the life of a transmission and transfer case. Couldn't really find anything about it. Now I know you can make them last long with simple easy driving. But with a few 5K drops, I was wondering about how long they would last.
Eventhough I don't want to go replacing the tranmission, I saw a nice upgraded stage 3 TRE transmission so I'm not really worried about that. My main concern would be the transfer case. I have only found a few of them on the internet all going for above $1k, and that is either stock or rebuilt. I read an article on the EVO transfer case, and someone stated that they are good for about 15 hard launches and then they are done. Has anybody ever come across a modified transfer case that is better than stock? How many launches can one expect to get out of a normal stock transfer case?

Re: Tranny and transfer case life
$1000 for a transfer case?! Where are you looking dude, thats like an $80 part. I dont know how many launches you can expect to get out of them, but I dont think you've got a lot to worry about. If you blow one and want a built one I believe you can get them from Shep and even then they are less than $1000.
If I ever blow a tranny, there is three things I would consider. One would be rebuilding my own tranny, but I think I would have to get a 92-94 tranny to rebuild because I think thats all that TRE sells. Another thing I would consider is a rebuild from DogBox racing as they are the cheapest of the tranny rebuild services I have found. The last thing I would consider is tracking down one of those wide block 4g63's, a turbo Starion tranny/drive shaft/rear end and letting 'er buck RWD style . I am not too worried though, my tranny shifts nice now (sustained shifts at 6k bitches! ) and its not like shes going to be put through hell anyway. I should also note that merely dumping the clutch at 5k is not exactly the best way to launch, not only because its hell on your clutch, tranny, and t case, but because it doesnt yeild the best possible 60' times. I read an article on it once, if you look around a bit I bet you can find it. |

Re: Tranny and transfer case life
This is sorta a question that can't really be answered. None of us known how long transfer cases are going to last. I have heard of people destroying transfer cases on their first launch. I also know plenty of people who use their GSX/TSI as a daily driver and drive at the track every weekend and have never had to replace theirs.

Re: Tranny and transfer case life
Well I first checked drivetrain.com and they had a remanufactured transfer case for 1300. Buschurracing.com had a stock oem 1g for $725, but I saw nothing for the 2g. I was doing some research on it, and they said usually the only thing that breaks is the center differential, and that along with the seals is the only thing you need to rebuild it. But the quaife center LSD is 1400. From what I've read, the main reason a transfer case might break, is because of wheel hop. But, I don't see that happening very much in an AWD unless you are putting down so much power that you are burning out. With a 5K drop in the GSX i heard a little chirp from the tire(s). I definately don't plan on doing it a lot, maybe just for those few times a year I might visit the track. But I would like to hear about the AWD guys experience, an estimate on how many times on average you guys do serious launching, and what problems if any have you run into. Thanks in advance.

Re: Tranny and transfer case life
IIRC a "quick slip" with the stutterbox set at 4500 is the optimal launch. As for the center differential, I as always under the impression that is in the tranny, not the t case. Am I wrong?

I have never had a problem with a transfer case or the differential, but I have busted a few axles launching.

The EVO 8 could be completely different.
