Need help replacing c220 climate control

I recently purchased a 96 C220 that needs the climate control center replaced. Can any tell me how to get the old one out and if the new one just plugs in and works. Do you need to take the wood off first and if so how? Any codes I need to find out? Also I ran across 4 different part numbers for climate control centers that all look alike and are listed for that model. Are they interchangeable? Any help would be appreciated.
