1/24 MFH Aston Martin DB-R 9 Silverstone 05
After seeing all the ModelFactory Hiro threads I thought I join the group build
I actually started the kit 2 months ago and wanted to wait to post my pics until I painted the body since you all know how damn slow I'm building... But I guess we all learn from eachother building this kit so I thought I post my experiance too. I start right away with progress shots but if somebody wants some pics of the unbuilt kit just let me know and I post some! Ok let's start with the body, it looks really good but there are a lot of little imperfections which need to be fixed. First step giving the body a wet sand with 800 sandpaper then testfitting the parts for the body which are seperate parts. You can see that I drilled out the "screws" at the louvers and I planned the insert some MFH rivets but the 0,8mm rivets are simply out of scale so I later filled them again... still not sure what to do about them... ![]() I also made "holes" for all the meshes that are supplied with the kit, normally you should simply glue them on it didn't make a big change in the look but whatever... ![]() ![]() I also changed the rear wing support (simply drilled out) ![]() (thanks to JayKay for taking the pics at Goodwood) ![]() ![]() First layers of primer sprayed to see how much work is left for the body (and the white metal parts) and some more testfitting one of the most important parts of multimedia kits...![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Diffusor required some work, the original part (left) is extremly thick so after some sanding and a lot of resin dust, I got a quite convincing result (right) ![]() Interior testfit, the seat doesn't fit as well as the tools box... ![]() And then there's the problem with the rear left wheel which is way to much inside the fender... sorry the pic doesn't show it well, but take a look at Klutz's thread he caught it pretty good ![]() But that's no big deal, you simply have to extend the spacers. I made myself some new ones on the lathe. ![]() Another big part which needs some modifications are the air intake parts.. The stock part (front) looks ok but on the left and right should be meshes which should be glued on the part but I decided to cut the metal away to get some more realism. But now to the important part, the original intake looks like this... ![]() (again thanks to JayKay) And this is the stock part (testfit as you can see )![]() left stock part and right my modified part, I cut away the areas where meshes should be placed and reshaped the part. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Let's start with some details, the brakes. The kit comes with some nice PE parts which I sanded and glued together. ![]() ![]() Then I painted them with Alclad II Aluminium and applied little wash with thinned matt black followed by a little rub with SNJ powder. I am really happy with the look. ![]() I also started with the CF work, worked on the mirrors, rear wing and front splitter. I first painted them with Finisher's semi gloss black which isn't really good if you plan to use MicroSol & Set, the paint starts to "bubble" if you apply to much. Next time I will try the Zero Paints, does anyone have experiance with Zero + MicroSol & Set? Oh by the way decals are from F1 Specialties. I also made some more parts on my lathe, like the air jack parts and exhaust tips which I have to make again because the first ones are way to small as you can see ![]() This one will be the perfect car for the Racingminiatures CF display base! ![]() Ok thats it for now, today I sprayed another layer of primer on the body and I hope to spray the green (Zero Paint) soon... EDIT: @ Klutz by the way I found a good color for the rims, Alclad 2 Magnesium looks like the way to go. I painted them today, pics will follow soon. Re: 1-24 MFH Aston Martin DB-R 9 Silverstone 05
Oh yes! I'm in Aston heaven
![]() All these months on AF an never an Aston in sight and now 3 at the same time (and by accident, too!) Super fix on the front intake That part has been bothering me from the outset but I couldn't figure out what was wrong or what to do. Now I know what is wrong but I can also see that fixing it is beyond my skill so I'll just have to live with it ![]() You should have titled your thread 1-2-3 MFH Aston Martin DBR9 and not 1-2-4 ![]() EDIT: Quote:

![]() ![]() the painted rim looks kinda matt in the pic but that's not the case, it got a nice shiny "metallic" look. |

Looks great
I must see if I have that color A2 in my box. Those photos of yours make it clear that the MFH spokes are actually much thicker than on the original rims

Ok small update, mainly worked on the body which I actually wanted to paint last weekend but I discovered some more things which need to be done before painting.. First thing is a PE Part that goes infront of the air intake, probably to restrict the airflow ?! The problem is that the part is "way" (2mm) to big, if you use the part right away and glue it in the right place (right under the panel lines) there is a overlap and the whole front splitter won't fit.. I learned it the hard way and had to re-do it... You have to cut about 2mm away, like this ![]() And then I glued it in place using some 2 part epoxy glue (These pics are taken on my first try with the standart PE part) Oh by the way the clothespins are miniature clothspins, don't get confused ![]() ![]() ![]() Then onto the next parts, there are some PE parts for the floor panels on the side of the car... but once again the parts don't fit very well... They are way too long and don't fit to the chassis. I am really happy that I made a testfit because I only wanted to paint the parts to save some time... bad idea when working on multimedia kits!!! Sadly the pic doesn't show it very well but take a close look to the rear wheel housing, there you can see that the PE part is about 2mm to long and about 1-2mm wider than the body. ![]() this one shows it better ![]() and here a comparison shot of the parts, upper box stock, lower sanded to shape. As you can see I only shortened it by about 2mm and sanded a little radius to the corner so it suits the body better (look at the left side). ![]() And about the width of it since I didn't want to mess with the overall shape of the PE part I decided to "modify" the chassis a bit. You can see on the right the modified area around the hole where you screw the body and chassis together. Left side still untouched... ![]() And final testfit, looks good so far... ![]() Then I moved on to the little front wings which they only ran in Silverstone, the LM versions don't have them. The pic shows not the exact same version so they look a bit different but you get the idea. ![]() They are made from two PE Parts which need to be bend to the right shape. And once again I made a little modification to the parts, as you can see the stock part (2nd from left) has two little brackets where they should be attached to the body.. but I decided to remove one because I couldn't get them to fit to the right position on the front bumper.. because of the "round" shape of the bumper. I hope one bracket will be enough to attach them properly but atleast the position will be right ![]() ![]() I also did some more work on all the CF parts but I forgot to upload the pics So I will post them in the next post. Tomorrow I will be painting most parts and priming the body once again, when everything is fine I will maybe add one more layer white primer and then finally Zero Aston green, can't wait... |
