Parttimeauto

Hmmmmm or possibly Whine When accelerating from stopped position. As speed increases so does the sound. It seems to be coming from the front end but does not favor one side or the other. Transmission? Please help.

Re: Parttimeauto

Welcome to AF. Almost impossible to offer comprehensive advice for a noise of this nature without a road test. How about neutral any noise? How about the year, please provide all the info when posting!

Re: Parttimeauto

Sorry my first post did not come out the way I wanted it to. This is a 98SE and there is no sound in neutral or when idling in drive. As soon as the car starts accelerating the noise begins and as the car goes faster the noise also increases. I read a previous post from a gentleman whose wife told him that it sounded like there was a model airplane under the hood. His explanation of the noise "model airplane" was better than mine. The advice he was given was 75% wheel bearing problem. It seemed in line with my problem. How would I know that it was a wheel bearing? Take it to a mechanic and have it checked out or is there a way I could check it myself?

Thank you for the reply.

Re: Parttimeauto

if the noise changes steadily with speed, and also with subtle directional changes at speed, then it's most likely a hub. If it changes each time the trans shifts, it could be a PCS problem in the trans.

Re: Parttimeauto

I had not noticed changes in the noise level with slight directional changes but will take a ride tomorrow to specifically listen for this symptom. There is no noticeable change when the trans shifts.

Thanks and I will let you know the results.
