Won't idle..

OK,

Here is the history.. 2 years ago the fuel pump went out. Blaser sat for almost a year. Finally changed out the fuel pump. Left the very old gas in the tank. Drove the vehicle to try and use up the old gas. Yes, I know I should have drained the tank.

Vehicle sat for another 2 months. My Wife went out to start the s10 and it would not idle. Ran at speed but would die at idle.

Finally decided to remove old gas and install new. Added injector cleaner. Vehicle still does not idle. I'm figuring the TBI injectors are shot?

Any other ideas??

1989 s10 4.3 tbi.

Re: Won't idle..

Check and wipe clean the Idle Air Control valve (IAC) on your TBI.
This '92 book shows one blue/white, one blue/black, one light green/black, and one light green/white set of wires on the correct connector.
Spray some carburetor cleaner into the hole the IAC came from also, but don't spray the IAC itself, spray some cleaner on a cloth then wipe off the little plug valve so it won't stick to the seat in the hole.

Re: Won't idle..

OK,

Finally got to it.

Still won't idle. Noticed a stream of fuel running out of the injector. Are these things cleanable or do I need new ones?

Re: Won't idle..

Place one of your sparkplug wires-sparkplug end on a known good sparkplug and ground it then have an assistant try to start the motor while you observe it to see if it sparks.

Re: Won't idle..

If an injector is leaking, the pintle probably has dirt or varnish deposits from the old fuel on it and it's not sealing. Unplug the electrical connector at the injector and see if it still leaks with the key on, and engine off. If it does, you'd be better off replacing the injector rather than trying to clean it. The pintle and orifice have precission sealing surfaces, if even one of them gets scratched, the injector will leak.

Re: Won't idle..

The injector is leaking...

I have replacement injectors but they seem to be the wrong ones.

My supplier asked for the enging numbers. Where are they located?

I have an 89 S-15 with a dual injector TBI.

Re: Won't idle..

He probably needs the 8th character in the VIN, small plate on dash, visable through the windshield, driver side. I think there are two possibilities for the injector, ...you already know which one it isn't

Re: Won't idle..

Latest info...

Replaced the injectors. The large drops of fuel have been replaced by a large spray. Still won't Idle. I was told to get the codes and see what they say. I was also told if I did not have a code reader I couls jump a couple of the pin outs and read the flashing of the check engine light for the codes. Lastly I was told that the computer may be in limp mode and that if I could keep it running for a period of time the computer would re-learn and adjust accordingly.

If all else fails I'll be putting a carb on this motor.

If it's flooding as bad as you say it is, there's something wrong and the ECM will not re-learn until the problem is repaired. Check the connection at the coolant temperature sensor, make sure it's clean and tight. Remove the EGR valve and make sure the pintle is sealing tightly.

Re: Won't idle..

if all else fails check your egr valve
if it sticks open it will not idle but will drive at higher engine speeds
i have a 94 cpi w/an elctronic egr valve
a peice of carbon was holding my valve open
it wouldn't idle but would drive fine
if it is stuck open
you have large vac leak

Re: Won't idle..

Update....

Correctly installed the gaskets for the new injectors. It now idles.

Good spray coming out of the injectors. New problem. Major fuel leak from the back where the fuel feed lines are located. Found I did not tighten the inlet fuel nut tight enough, Re tighten. Still have major leak.
I'm thinking either the fuel pressure regulator assy or I crossed threaded the inlet nut. I do not think I cross threaded as I can turn the nut by hand for many turns before needing to tighten down with wrench.

Re: Won't idle..

Update to the update....

I did indeed mess up the threads where the fuel inlet nuts go.

Does anybody know where I can buy a replacement lower half section of the fuel meter body?

Re: Won't idle..

Remove the old one and take it to a boneyard, have them match it up. Don't forget to replace the gasket.
