Cool 94 Range Rover difficulty starting, runs rough

My 94 Range Rover County LWB with 4.2L has new plug wires (except for coil wire). New tank, new fuel pump kit, "new used" Mass Air Flow Sensor. I have ordered a new coil.

Here is the problem: It starts right up in warm dry weather or dry cool weather. Even sometimes in wet weather. But as the day goes by, it becomes more difficult to start. Also, it runs rough until I hit 55mph, then the transmission shifts and it takes off and runs fast and smooth. It idles rough, like its "missing." Sometimes it refuses to start. Then, I pull the plugs, turn it over, replace the plugs and it starts right up. Upon removal, the plugs smell like gas and are wet, so I hit 'em with a bic lighter to dry them off before I replace them. I also get this gasoline smell inside and outside the car during a hard start like its flooding. There is no Land Rover mechanic here. I'm on an island in Sitka, Alaska.

Does anyone have an idea what his might be caused by, and how to fix it? I worked in an auto shop for 2 years, went to 2 years of diesel mechanic school, and have a few good mechanic friends to help me. But they are stumped, too. Only 2 people around here have great knowledge of electronic fuel injection systems. One of them told me to replace the coil, so I have a coil on order now.

I have tried the local shop, and they are good at all foreign models except for Land Rovers. This Range Rover problem has them scratching their heads. Anchorage or Seattle are the closest Land Rover mechanics, and they are 1500 miles away by ferry or the Alaskan Highway. So now I am attemting to solve this problem using the internet.
