Are there tricks or traps in replacing Cavalier starter?

99 Cavalier
I think 2.2L engine but have to check for sure.

Car was not starting in driveway, I think it is the starter.

Cleaned all the wire connections on the solenoid.
Key in switch, dash lit up, turned to start, one loud click from under hood, everything totally black, dead, and quiet.

Not an experienced repair person. Looks like disconnecting all the wires to the solenoid and removing 3-4 bolts to get starter off, reverse process for new one.

Are there issues in making a new one mesh properly with the flywheel? Are there other issues I should be aware of before attempting the repair myself?

Thanks.

Re: Are there tricks or traps in replacing Cavalier starter?

Check your battery before you pull your starter off. It should be around12.5 volts with the engine off. Also before you pull the starter give it a tap with a bar or hammer then try to start it(you don`t have to beat the crap out of it). if she starts likely the solenoid, then you`ll know it is starter related and it has to come off . I have not pulled one off these engines but have done others ,it is usually pretty straight forward ,no biggy. I`m sure some who has will respond if there are tricks to this model

Re: Are there tricks or traps in replacing Cavalier starter?

I don't know this year specifically... but the older 2.2s had a bracket on the starter to brace it against kicking back and forth, and it must be reinstalled or it will break the bolts over time.. ask me how I know Bracket would be between the starter and the a/c bracket....

Closed. anomaly_va_1976 doesn't seem to know when to stop bringing up old outdated threads.
