1999 passat problem

I have a 1999, 1.8t, 5 speed passat and recently got a check engine light. Upon starting, the engine ran extremely rough (enough to shake the steering wheel at idle). OBD2 gave me a p0301 cylinder 1 misfire code. I replaced the sparkplug and checked the coil which I thought might be cracked. I also unplugged the coil and checked out the connection plug to cylinder 1 and it looked fine. Autozone didn't have the original Audi spark plug (3 prong) so I got a single pronged plug to replace it. After replacing the plug on 1, the engine seemed to run a little smoother, but not like it normally does and the check engine light came back on. Unfortunately, the OBD2 was a loner so I'm not sure if the light is sending the same code, but I'm assuming it is since the engine is still running roughly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

1999 passat problem update

I just swapped the coils on one and two and still the same problem. Engine oil smells a little like gasoline. Got the OBD back and after erating the p0301 code, it came back on

Re: 1999 passat problem

Try searching previous threads, I remember there was similar issue with cylinder 1 missfire. Good luck.
