Help out the new guy....
1st post in this forum. Name is Randy from Illinois. The wife has a 2003 Grand Prix GT and told me about a "growling" noise when she hits the brakes. I drove it and also heard a slight noise but didn't feel anything in the brake pedal or the steering wheel. So I changed out the rear disc pads and checked out the rotors and calipers. Still had the noise so I changed out the front pads. All rotors and calipers are good and pads are new. Still have the noise. But it's only when applying the brakes. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.....

Re: Help out the new guy....
Do you hear the noise only when hitting the brakes or all the time. If it is only there when you brake you are on the right track. If it is there all the time then the issue is probably a front wheel bearing. While it doesn't happen often they can go bad without setting a light for a bad ABS sensor. Also bearing noise can sometimes only be heard when applying the brakes due to the extra stress on the bearing during braking.

Re: Help out the new guy....
Yes it's only when hitting the brakes. It's not real loud. With the windows open the wind noise drowns out the sound. With the windows up you can just hear/feel the growling. To me it sounds like it's coming from the rear but I know sound travels so I'm not sure where it's coming from. I driving it to Indianapolis in the morning so I hope it's nothing to worry about!
Thanks for the replies! |
