Help Please
Hi guys. I’m getting ready to rebuild my motor in my 1996 Eagle Talon TSI AWD auto transmission...ran into a little problem wondering if anyone had some words of advice.
I’m in the middle of trying to pull the motor and having a little trouble. I have already undone all the bolts connecting the engine to the transmission, taken off the transfer case, and undone the motor mount by the pulleys on the driver’s side. Dose anyone has any tricks on how to get the engine and transmission separated? Hell I have also undone the transmission mounts in an attempt to take the transmission out with it....don’t want to test that weight on my rafters. I do have experience doing this type of work. All where on trucks and seemed a lot easier undo the engine from the transmission. So I’m not completely new to this but have never run into this problem before. Thank you in advance for your advice. |

Re: Help Please
You need to support your tranny from the bottom, then you might have to carefully pry them about, Dont jam a crow bar in at the edge of the tranny. Find something on the outside you can use to push against. It shouldn't take alot of force. Make sure the tranny and motor are supported bc when you slid that input shaft out the motor you dont want the tranny to drop.

Re: Help Please
There isn't enough clearance to pull the motor off the tranny input shaft without pulling or dropping the tranny too. At least I couldn't get enough clearance when I did mine. It's certainly a lot easier to just pull it all as one unit and put it back in as one unit too... You might as well now that you've made it this far with unbolting everything... Drop the cross member under the tranny, disconnect the rear and front motor mounts and put a few bolts back in to reconnect the tranny to the motor and pull it all out. You will have to drop the tranny side really low and lift the motor side high and at an angle in order to clear everything... Hope that helps some...

Re: Help Please
ok, crowbar idead dident really pan out. The droping it out of the bottom is an awsome idea and seems to be working out great, thanks! Just one thing, this is my first front wheel drive auto tranny ive taken out. How the hell do you get the axles out of the tranny?
Thanks for the info |

Re: Help Please
Okay I just got home from the bar, but regardless....WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT????? I pulled the motor out of my 95 TSI AWD in 3 hours with no previous experience of dealing with the 4g63. Disconnect all the lines from the motor, unbolt the tranny from the motor (don't forget the flywheel bolts), unbolt the motor from the motor mounts, and don't forget to unbolt the axle support from the back of the block. Other than that, it should come out with a little bit of TLC. Don't try to rip it out with the cherrypicker, otherwise you'll ruin shit, just pull it out nice and easy and it should come smoothly.

Re: Help Please
make sure you have it in neutral, it helps work it loose. starter has to be taken off, i believe it is 4 bolts on that model. exhaust has to be taken off along with the 5 bolts holding on the transfer case. both cv axles have to be clear of the tranny. there are two bolts on top of the tranny, one on the front, and one facing the opposite way in the back. very important, take the splash shield off the bottom also. ive seen to many attepts to pull the tranny of with the splash shield holding it on. as far as unbolting the torque converter, not required but makes it 12 times easier to pull out. this method works because i did it about 3 hours ago on mine, except mine is a 5 speed, but i had done it many times on that 92 talon auto i owned.

Re: Help Please
I donno what ya'll are smoking, but it is definitely easier to pull the motor and tranny out together IMO...
As for getting the axles out of the tranny... There are snap rings on them and you have to wedge a crowbar/prybar between the tranny and the green part of the axle and then give it a blunt hit to pop them out... Unless somebody has an easier way of doing that too...

Re: Help Please
Ok prybar is working out wonderfully, have the axle out of the transmission on the pasengers side, little confused on the drivers side. Here is what im seeing. Any help would be appreashated.
Now is the axle going to come out at the #1 position like im thinking is should but not exactly seeing how to pry it out. Or is it comming appart at the #2 because there is a green part like blackcrow mentioned.

Re: Help Please
the drivers side just falls out when you take the two bolts holding the axle on, take the other side out of the wheel hub. it actually seperates in the middle, where it pivots. if you pry between the green thing and the mounting bracket. careful not to bust the seal. taking the engine out will take many more hours but in most cases, if you are doing major work to the engine, it is easier to take the tranny out by itself...if you got air tools, you can have it out in about 5 hours no prob

Re: Help Please
Yeah why the fuck are you disconnecting the tranny? I pulled my motor in one day never having done it before.
Just pull the whole thing out from the top if you have a crane or drop it through the bottom.
