Thumbs up 318i Windscreen Wiper Woes

Hi folks.

I have a 1991 J reg'd 318i

The windscreen wipers do not auto-park when you switch them off, so wherever they are on the screen when you switch off the column switch is where they remain. Intermittent wipe doesn't work either, it tries to but just sticks and stops within the A zone.

The only part I personally consider to be responsible looks like a tall relay, blue in colour and is located behind a panel below the steering wheel. It is however not a relay it is a control device and seems to be responsible for some functionality of the wipers as does a smaller blue relay directly to the right of it.

I changed the wiper motor but it didn't make any difference whatsoever.

The only other thing I haven't done is to look into the fault memory because at this point I don't know how (one reason I'm here)

I got the impression from the main dealer technician that if the fault memory is not cleared then even if I fix the problem, the car may still think the fault exists and will still behave that way - Is this true, even down to the wiper motor?

Enormous thanks for any helpful advice.

Dave.
