WIP: Colin McRae 1998 Subaru Impreza WRC (Tribute Build)

Tribute Build Part 2.

This has to be one of the most striking and yet simple colour schemes and I have been looking forward to trying to recreate it for ages.

so here inside the box...

I have had this for a while and over the years managed to pick up the Scale Motorsport, Acu-stion & M&A Miniatures detail sets. I actually prefer the non tobacco markings rather than the 555 livery so I'll be using the kit decals on this one!

The roll cage is alot less complex than the Pug and fits together like a glove...

The front bonnet catches, roof vents and rear catches are all to be removed to be replaced with etched versions...

These are the replacement roof parts...

Spotlights pod took a little cleaning up...

as did the rear wing...

but with a coat of primer down it looks fairly good so far...

more to come soon

Great start on this one as well.If I can make one suggestion which may make life easier when you come to place the decals. You should remove the antenna mounts and the GPS transponder on the roof. There is a large decal that fits over these and they make the fitting of it very awkward. It is much easier to lay the decal over the flat roof.If you don't want to remove them though the alternative is to punch small holes through the decal with a punch and die set, then the antenna bases and the transponder will comfortably fit through the holes and the decal won't wrinkle.

Sean,

Looking forward to following this one.

Please don't forget to blend the front foglight covers into the bumper once they're glued in place and before spraying color.

If you need reference material, let me know and I can look through my Subaru photos.

I learned that one the hard way while putting the decals on an Opel DTM kit.

The build looks great though.
Sad to lose such a great driver.

Steve,

thanks for that, that was going to be the plan to be honest as I have got some 1/24 metal aerials on order.

Ray, thanks also for that. I thought that the bottom spots were separate units and were just bolted on when needed, therefore they would have a seam all the way round though? If Im wrong then I will attach them before spraying obviously, thanks again though.

No, the bumper cover is one unit, there are mounting holes in the bumper either side of the fog lamp covers where the auxilliary lights connect. I will send you some high res photos which are on my home PC later today, in the meantime have a look on swrt.com in the gallery for photos of the 1997 to 1999 Impreza WRC to get a better idea.

Here's some photos which may help you in the meantime:

And with the Aux. lamps in place - if you look carefully you can see how they fit over the bumper cover:

I've got about 95 close up pictures of a '98/'99 Subaru Impreza WRC on my site. There are also a few close-ups of the front bumper. You can find them here:http://photos.keepturningleft.com/th...s.php?album=23. I'm using them to build the '99 Sub used by Possum Bourne... Tim

thanks very much for the link to those pictures, they will prove very usefull indeed and underlines what Ray has said about the front bumper. I have attached the two lower spotlights and will get those gaps filled in.

thanks again chaps.

Re: WIP: Colin McRae 1998 Subaru Impreza WRC (Tribute Build)

a quick update,

unfortunately my local shop has returned all its Tamiya sprays as they have been recalled apparently (here in the UK) not sure if its the same anywhere else in the world - I'd be interested to here. Anyway, as a result I couldnt pick up any Mica Blue so Im a bit stuck!

In the meantime I have done lots of little 'sub-models'. Im just painting all the bits that I can do without the shell and body being sprayed (not much though I can tell you). Im on the dashboard at the moment which is always a favourite area of mine!

thanks Dave, that was sprayed Matt Black yes, however it is also dry brushed with Humbrol's MetalCote (dark Alu) just to give it a little semi-matt look. I dont like using semi-gloss spray as it looks to glossy for my liking.
