Re: 99 Silverado Window Motor

You should be able just to replace the motor.

Re: 99 Silverado Window Motor

you might find that the cable has snapped or become badly frayed. i was told that the whole thing is an assembly, kind of like a fishing reel and line.

Re: 99 Silverado Window Motor

If you try to operate your window and it does nothing but you can hear the motor running and it sounds like things are twisting and grinding and popping inside of the door, your window regulator cable is destroyed and the regulator should be replaced. If you try to operate your window and absolutely nothing happens (no motor running), and provided you have power and ground to the motor, then the motor is most likely frozen.

Here's the disclaimer: The motor and regulator can be replaced seperately of eachother. However;
1) if you replace one half of it (regulator and not the motor, or motor and not the regulator), it is very possible the other component could fail shortly afterwards and you would have to go through all the motions again.

2) Even though the motor and regulator can be replaced seperately, no one said it was easy. This can involve saying lots of bad things and throwing wrenches across the room. If you are in the process of replacing a component and the spool of regulator cable comes untangled (even on a brand new regulator), this can be very difficult to re-wind.

My recommendation to save a lot of time, frustration, grief, and even money in the long run would be to replace the entire motor and regulator assembly. It is completely assembled as one piece when you get it and is pretty straight forward to install into the door.
