92 Ford Taurus Instrument Cluster Removal Instructions

Does anyone have the instructions for removing instrument cluster from a 1992 Ford Taurus? It is automatic, shifter on the column.

My problem is a chattering speedometer. The speedometer works but, is making this clicking or better described as a chattering noise. I reached up behind the dash and it seems like the speedometer cable is loose. There is not enough room to tighten it if indeed that is the problem. If someone has a different diagnosis, I would like to hear it as well.

By the way, these are great cars. This is my fourth of this generation and they have all served me well. Just remember to flush the transmission fluid every once in awhile.

Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest you start by lubricating the speedometer cable, but to do that you will want to pull the instrument cluster as well.

I don't remember any tricks to pulling the instrument cluster. I think it was simply a matter of removing a couple of screws holding the trim panel around the cluster, then removing 6 or 8 screws holding the cluster in. Pull the cluster out a few inches and disconnect the wiring connector and the speedo cable.

The speedometer cable will then pull out of the cable sheath. Keep a rag handy as the cable is long and should have some amount of grease on it. While pulling the cable, look for wear and broken strands.
