rowed myself into the hospital

so i just got back from a two night stint at the hospital.

cole's notes at the bottom

it all started on a cool saturday morning, the alarm goes off at 6:15, i fight with my covers to get out of bed and eliminate the enemy that is my buzzer. i get dressed, half asleep, eyes half shut, in my lycra unitard, lycra tights, long sleeve top, and jacket. I proceed to rush out to my car after noticing i took too long and am now running late, no time to eat or drink before leaving. i pick up my coxie on campus and drive to the rowing club, early as usual.

today is the deaded 2000m test day. the 2000m is the most painful thing you're likely to experience in sport, the entire time your body is yelling at you to stop. i get on the erg (ergometer, rowing machine for you non-rowing types) do my warm up, set my erg, etc. my coach calls "attention, ROW" and i fucking giv'er. at about the 500m mark i start seeing stars and feeling queezy "fuck that, i'm not letting my body stop me" and i push even harder. by the 1500m mark i'm giving it all i've got but my body physically won't let me pull any harder. i finish with a 7:04.9, 5 seconds off of my goal. i take my feet out of the foot stretchers, fall off the machine, and can't move. after about 5 minutes i call for a bucket and start heaving. the rest of the practice is spent in the coach boat, my coach didn't let me row, we go to breakfast, etc. at about 4 i have a nap and when i wake up my kidneys are killing me. it's as though someone's punching me in the sides with every heartbeat. i go to the hospital and the rest is just a haze of morphein, iv's with fluids (i got about 11L of salein pumped into me over 2.5 days, 8 of which were within the first day), and blood tests. i'm home now but can't row until my kidneys return to normal.

coles notes:
i was really dehydrated and rowed a 2000m test, threw up, went to the hospital, kidneys are fucked for now but are recovering. can't row until they get back to normal.

one line sum-up:
morphein's a hell of a drug

There are much easier ways to get your hands on Morphine.

Glad you're OK - Lesson Learned about hydration and sport? You HAVE to eat something for breakfast before attempting anything physical too.

Exactly, eat a banana a day too. The potassium (sp?) helps reduce muscles from tensing up too.

Re: rowed myself into the hospital

yeah i'm doing alot better now, the pain is almost non-existant, i'm no longer constipated from the morphine, and i'm drinking alot more than i used to. i still get little jabs of pain every once in a while at the end of the day but it's not that bad. i hope the doc tomorrow tells me i can row or i'll be pissed, although my coach already told me i'm taking this week off and i'm not competing in this sunday's race.

eating to me isn't as important as drinking before practise unless we're doing hard peices. if it's just a technical row i can get away with it and not feel bad but if we're doing stuff like 6X500m or 2k's i have to eat before or i feel woozy.

Re: rowed myself into the hospital

You have to eat _something_ before doing any physical activity.

It doesn't have to be a full meal, just a banana or muesli bar to make sure your blood sugar doesn't get too low.

MAybe you can hook yourself up to an IV while on the boat! put a liiiiittle bit of morphine (or cocaine, what have you) in the bag and you'll be good to row all day!

Re: rowed myself into the hospital

So were you on a rowing machine or boat when this happened?

I've been doing the machines recently and I gotta disagree with you about a 2000 meter being the hardest thing in sport. Although I could see that much in 7min being a bitch for sure. Today I did 1200 in 5, not full out tho, just warming up for other stuff.

Re: rowed myself into the hospital

I found that 2000m pieces on the water suck...since water and erg differ a LOT IMO.

and 10 min pieces on the erg suck just as much.

1200 is nothing, it's a walk in the park no matter how hard you're pulling. split you had for the 1200 is what i hold when i'm rowing for an hour. try pulling a 2000m balls to the wall the entire time. and when i say balls to the wall, i mean every stroke is as hard as you can pull and you never let off. do that, then you can say it's not absolutely brutal.

also i just got my test results and it turns out that i can't row until october 11. that means that i'll have two weeks before the provincial and national competitions. i'll be 3 weeks out of shape, my technique will need to be touched up, the boat will have to get used to the new rower, i won't be able to cut down to lightweight by competitions, etc. we decided we'll stick another guy who transfered from another university in the boat and row exibition races this year (transfer students can't compete for their first year at the new university). so i guess come october 11 i'll just be training for the summer season and next years season.

What about sex first thing in the morning? does that count as sport? hard to squeeze in a meal before that
