92 olds cutless 3.3L v6 crank sensor setting

On my Olds. cutless ciera s 3.3L V6 automotic trans.

-Once I remove the harmonic balancer and install the new crank sensor, describe how to set the sensor in the right position (using feeler gauge). -Exactly where do I measure from using the feeler gauge?
-What is the correct gap?

Thanks for any help!!!

when you pull off the old sensor, measure it. you have a little room for play here, so don't worry, get that thing as close as you can and it'll fire up.

Re: 92 olds cutless 3.3L v6 crank sensor setting

I pulled the old crank sensor out the small opening before removing the harmonic balancer & it broke(so I cant see how the old one is positioned). Now that I have the harmonic balancer off, there are 2 shiny metal rings (Interrupter rings?) that the 2 groves in the crank sensor goes between i guess (not sure how all this fits together). I have the sensor in the mounting bracket but need to adjust it and not sure how to.

How do I get a feeler gauge to measure the .02 gap called for between the outer surface of the interrupter ring and the crank sensor??

Thanks for all the advice and help from everyone!!!

if you can just mount your sensor without any part of the crank hitting it you be ok... just get it as close as you can... you'll do fine.... as long as your not out to lunch, and get it AS close as you CAN... your car will fire up..

Re: 92 olds cutless 3.3L v6 crank sensor setting

How can I tell if any part of crank (interrupter rings on harmonic balancer?) hits the crank sensor? When I put the harmonic balancer on, the crank sensor is hidden behind it. It does have some access on the side but not sure how to put feeler gauge, or just look and see if any part of sensor hits interrupter ring when turn the balancer...How do I check to see if the sensor hits????

Thanks for any help!!!...this has me confused!!!.....

theres really no way to see inside , the screws that hold sensor on will mount the sensor correctly you will see there is not much space to adjust just mount it and go

if you really need confirmation... you should be able to ohm the sensor and watch for activity that way...

how have you made out so far, i think this is a few days since any replies here..

Re: 92 olds cutless 3.3L v6 crank sensor setting

I installed all the parts- harmonic balancer and crank sensor. Car started but alot of smoke out of exhaust (which never happened before). Do I need to install a new crank O Ring? What could cause the smoke out of exhaust??(the car did not run for like 1/2 year before it starting now).

Re: 92 olds cutless 3.3L v6 crank sensor setting

Exhaust problem fixed..just had to connect hose to cannister. Do I need to install the plastic shield at the back of the harmonic balancer that surrounds the harmonic balancer? I did not install it so I could line up the crank sensor. Also, I did not install a new crank O Ring seal..would alot of oil leak at that area? I will have to pull the harmonic balancer off now again to install the plastic shield (if needed) and while I am doing it if a lot of oil would leak out of the crank O Ring i might as well get a new O Ring too. I'd rather not do the O Ring if not needed as this I dont want to spend the money/time for it if not needed!

Thanks for all the help/advise from everyone!!
