Gearbox

I am hearing a grinding noise and it sounds like gears almost like a roller coaster sound. When I put the gearshift into reverse it sounds real loud. I am thinking it might be the gearbox. Has anybody ever had this problem and if so how much would it be to fix?

Re: Gearbox

Ok, seriously though...

Nobody is going to tell you how much it is to fix since all we know is your car makes a horrible noise. I cant even guess that one on the description.

What transmission do you have?
Does the car still drive with it in gear?
Does it only make noises when in gear?

Re: Gearbox

It's an automatic. It does drive when in gear and it does make noise when driving. Ever had this problem or know anybody with the same problem. I'd like to nip this in the bud as soon as possible because if not then it can get worse and end up costing me a fortune to replace the tranny.

Re: Gearbox

Does it make the noise when in gear and sitting still?

Re: Gearbox

Yeah. Not real loud but definately noticeable if the radio is off and you are listening for it.

Well, its either transmission related or some sort of vibration issue. I would get underneath the car with the car running and see exactly where the noise is coming home. Maybe its just a heat shield loose thats rubbing up against some bolts. I know one guy had some 'grinding' issues that turned out to be that. If its coming from inside the trans, your looking at probably at least $1000 to fix, since pulling these transmissions aren't fun.
