Power steering leak in 1967 Firebird

Apparently my car is leaking power steering fluid (I've had the car for 2 weeks). It's not leaking out of the car but running under and leaving a mess. A friend cleaned it up thinking it was just an old leak, but today we noticed it's leaking and isn't old fluid.

He pulled the nut off and the copper gasket along with it, and it appears that the copper gasket has been flattened, allowing fluid to leak out of the nut.

We could not find another copper gasket. He tried to put some sealant around and it did not fix it. Power steering fluid shoots out as if out of a straw.

My friend is thinking that the nut that is there is not the correct type (a lot of nuts and bolts were replaced incorrectly). He feels a "closed nut" is the correct type.

So, to stop rambling, my question is does anyone have a photo of the original setup showing the right type of nut, and does anyone know where I can obtain that nut and a copper gasket? He tried putting a washer between the nut and gasket to flatten it out and prevent fluid from leaking but it did not work.

(There are no local 1967 Firebirds that I'm aware of, so there is no one whose can I can check to see their setup)

Thank you in advance.

Should be able to buy/order the copper gasket at most NAPA autopart stores.

Also check places like www.yearone.com/ http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/

and Welcome to AF !

Thank you!

I went into Auto Zone and they had nothing remotely similiar, then we went to the hardware store and checked and again, nothing.

I went through my top 5 vendors this morning and could not find the gasket ...

Someone else told me to check the "flare" and felt that the power steering box for my car does not have any type of copper gasket ... meanwhile, she leaks ...

The Zone wouldnt carry this part or be able to order it.

Your best bet is Napa or a stealership, or the web sites I mentioned above.

I have a manual for this year but it doesnt show the breakdown of the pump and hoses...

With out the copper gasket its going to leak.
Might be able to find some sort of copper blank and cut fab your own, which isnt easy.

Parts are available for Firebirds/Camaro's even the older ones, you just have to dig around.

Might even check Fleabay
Maybe some one of these Firebird Gurru's at AF can help you out soon.

Also if "originality" isnt priority,
you could replace the pump with a newr model which doesnt use the part you need.

Good Hunting

With the gasket it's leaking like you'd not believe. An hour of driving and it was wheezing and the wheel would barely turn and I had to add fluid. I had just filled it up the day before.

I do have a new box on order but it takes a while to get here from the Left Coast.
