hell, im kinda of in this kinda bunch right now. ive been with this locally owned fast food place for about 3 years. mind you, ive been trained how to do everything, besides become a manager. hell, im the one that tells the manager how to do something if they dont know how to do it. people have been working there less, and are making more than me. i'm seriously at 6.60 an hour. im demanding a dollar raise, to compensate for my commitment to the company, show i have senority, and all the crap ive been threw. hell, ive been the person that trains people and other things. they call me in to fill in for other people. i better get this raisen within a month, or i am going to quit my job. ive already filed for it and everything.

i started out at 5.50, then 5.75 a year later when everyone else got the same raise even though i was there for a year longer, then 6.50 since i turned 18, and then the new raise in miniumum wage(6.50) came along. so ive been at 6.60 ever since i turned 18, and have senority, but not getting paid as much as everyone else. i cant be paid more than 8 bucks an hour, since that is their rule unless im going to become a manager, and thats not something i want to do. i mean, there is this person that came into the company maybe a year ago, and they make 7.25. yet, im with the company for about 3 years, and getting 6.60. so now im asking to be paid 7.60. mind you, i've never asked the company directly for a raise or anything, this is my first request.

and its hard getting another job, since i have wierd schedualling with collage classes and all. entry level jobs are all gone around here, and the campus hasnt gotten back to me on my applications on anything. if i do get a job interview, its...you are a college student, you cant handle the work here, or you cant get here on time since we are about 10 min out of the city, and i'd be leaving to get there during rush hour. its driving me nutz.

and i dont want to be in the position to get another loan, so i can cover the costs of food and rent, and have to pay back even more later. it really blows.

Working during college often sucks. I was in a somewhat similar position at Movie Gallery while I was in school. I worked there for a long time for 5.15 then finally got a raise after about 2 years to 5.90 after a new district manager came in and compared my hire date to my pay and realized I was getting screwed royally. Shortly after, the minimum wage was raised to 6.15 so everybody got a raise and I was making the same as new hires even though I was damn near assistant manager. My store manager gave me a $0.15 raise to bring me ahead of the pack, but it was still ridiculous considering I was called upon for way more tasks than any other employee.

Sounds like you have some of the same factors working against you as I did. Labor is cheap and its abundant where you live. If you quit, there's a line of applicants waiting to take your spot and probably for less money. Your true value lies in your experience and ability to function in many areas of the business without somebody holding your hand or looking over your shoulder. I can't really rationalize why they would bring a new hire in at a higher pay grade than you unless they had prior experience at another place with a higher position. Are you sure that its not against company policy for employees to know each others' pay rate? At Movie Gallery it definitely was and one of our DMs threatened to fire my friend and me because she accidentaly mentioned that she knew I had gotten a raise before.

I highly suggest you do not quit this job unless you have another lined up. But any new job you go to, you'll most likely be starting over from the bottom and quite possibly be making less than you make now as well as being the 'most expendable' employee on the roster.

Wow, its like the opposite for me. My town is so desperate for labor and has been for the past year and a half. I'm a college student and have been assistant manager at the restaurant I work at for 6 months now, cooking for over 3 years. $1.00 pay raise every 6 months. I could have been a manager over a year and a half ago, but I declined cuz I hate managing. Only reason I finally took the job is cuz I got sick of seeing the other ones completely blow at their job and cost my boss money.

yep. it kinda sucks. why am i wasying kinda sucks, it does suck. i still am going to be ahead of the pack, reguardless. they fucked up my raise scheduale. i was suppost to be 6.50 before the minimum wage increase, then a week later it increased since i turned 18. so i was screwed outta my 'raise'.

i could be manager, but i dont want to drop out of college, to make a measly 9.00 an hour.

and if i get a new job, its not much less i'd make. 6.60 to 6.50.

either way, i'll find out soon enough. it just sucks knowing i have to wait till the next paycheck or so to find out how much.

like honestly, i know more about running the resturant than almost everyone there, minus the cooks, since i dont know how to cook some of the entrees. it makes no sense. they rely on me soo much for things, but pay me like crap. we'll see.

what do you think of bring up some of the things that need to be fixed in the resturant to bring up at this meeting i have next week? i mean i think it shows that im thinking about the future and other things, but i dont want to sound like an ass at this meeting. i have a whole list of things that need to be taken care of right away, for saftey, security, and sanitation.

it's a fast food joint, it's a part time thing while you're studying; what's there to get so worked up about? Don't want to sound like an ass? Bring those things up to your immediate boss outside of official meetings. One thing though, why should those things be brought up. The way things work, those things should already be in place. If you need to mention them, that sounds like it means that it's employees not following procedure.

How old are you? I better stop complaining about my job. I work at Publix supermarket like 30hours a week and full time school. I get damn tired but I think its worth it. Im making like 9.50 right now.

Lol yeah. Just have to make the best of it. Just live your life in a way that makes you happy. There are ups and downs, but social interaction takes alot of the bad things and turns them into good things.

I think you'll do much better to point out your knowledge of the job, excellent personal attributes and commitment to the job.


Do NOT quit before you have another, better paid job ready to start the next day.

everyone knows i know everything about it. its just they aint paying everyone correctly. i have only missed 3 days of 'work' due to me having pink eye, and you cant work and have pink eye in the food industry. also, every day that i was called to see if i could come in, i did. dispite everything, i came in. w/e scheduale they gave me, i worked it. no matter what. even if i had other things of higher priority, i came to work. so idk where the commitment things come into play.

i mean, i know how to do everything, besides cook a couple entrees and place the order for the week. managers are happy to have me working on their shift. just makes their life a tad easier.

um, id rather work at a publix than where i am now. seriously, it just blows.
social interaction my ass. the only people that come in to where i work, are super fat, and have no manners. we have portions, and all the usual stuff, but since we 'are on welfare' we must get fast food rather than buy food from the local grocer and buy in bulk to save money and freeze save for a later date. people are dumb.

it might lay on the fact that its not the best part of the city to be working at, so the customer base is different.

drunken, this is for you . these things cant be done by us, the employees here. they need to hire contracters and things to do these jobs.

they just 'revovated the store' with new paint and things, but something has to be done about these things :

- lets just say the store is basically falling apart.
- there isnt enough security in the resturant to make customers feel safe at night in their cars in drive thru
- our door from the lobby to behind the counter is broken. this gives easy access to our cash drawers w/o having to jump the counter and be seen on camera besides the back of my neck
- one of our lobby doors dont lock, so the store can be broken into once your past one door. you can unlock that one door by pulling very hard on it. the thing will just break.
- only 3 cameras work in the resturant, when we have 5 mounted and ready to go
- no cameras over the drive thru only where cars pull into off the street
- only 3 parking spaces on one side of two sides for parking is covered by cameras.
- this can help identify the robbers in the area that have robbed us and other stores. police have come to the store before, asking for tape, and we just dont have it.
- also our drive thru is right next to an alley. the wall seperating us and the ally is 5 feet high. i can clear it if i wanted to easily if i was to rob someone waitin in drive thru
- we have a soda machine that is ant infested. i refuse to use it at all, but others use it for soda to give to customers. an ant will fall out the machine into the cup when we are 'making the drink'. and we have to pour it out and start all over again.
- we have a mouse problem, where we keep the 'food plates'

we need to upgrade our security at the store inside and out, and fix these other sanitary problems.

i mean, i can take pictures. the only thing from keeping me from saying anything, is that i want to keep a job, which is something hard to get around here, since everyone has high school diplomas, but nothing else. easy trade jobs are hard to find around here, but we are in desperate need of skilled workers here.

Sorry, it looks like I misunderstood what you meant by "saftey, security, and sanitation". Those things are usually part of the responsibilty of who-ever's in charge i.e the manager. In the UK, if these things aren't in place, the place can and probably will get shut down. As such, it is law to have employees who may or may not be the manager to have sufficient training in these areas, especially if the person is one who prepares food.

Just so you know, my family has 7 restaurants/take-aways/cafes and I have personally have run one of them for about half a year while "the old folks" took half a year off so it isn't like I don't know this business works.

I used to work for my city's health department and did routine food service health inspections. From the sounds of things, we would shut your place down within 5 minutes. All the physical and security maintenance is more the responsibility of the owner or district manager to handle. I'm sure your manager would like to have the problems ficed but if the money to do so isn't being provided by upper management then it aint getting done.

yea, but you dont see the ants going into the soda machine. they come from outside, thru the wall, to it. health inspectors dont see the problem, since it only happens once in awhile that an an comes out. at least 5 a day or so. actually have to use the machine, and you'll get lucky.

the mouse problem is going down, but its not quite finished. i personally believe we need the resturant fumed down, like they do in 5 star resturants.
