Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement

Has anyone replaced the cps in a 8.1 before.

Looking for some tips.

Truck is stalling randomly while driving. Happens when after a few miles of driving from a cold start. Conclusion from other forums is the cps. Heard horror stories from guys who had the dealer replace it, $900 +. Part is about $100 from dealer.

Not 100% sure this is the problem, but it can't hurt to replace it. 110,000 miles.

Got the sensor, heard it is a pia to replace.

Tips would be great.

driverside rear of block you have to unplug the harness then take the bolt that holds the cranksensor to the block out[have to have small hand] then bump sensor up out of block toward firewall when you go to put new one in oil the o ring and it will slip in the hole alot easier as there is no room to work in there.and to beat all some idiot put a fuel line up in the middle of the little space. oh yeah you will end up taking the trans bolt out of your way as it will eat on hide.

Be real careful when removing it. I heard that it's not uncommon for the sensor to break off in the block creating some real headaches. Good luck.

mine was dogknotted on the very end of it. thought thats what it was going to do. then i guess i would have just shot the thing. but after spraying some lube down the hole it finally popped out . but they could have made the bolt just a little more harder to get to oh well leave to an engineer to let it work real good on paper

the end of the sensor had split and swelled a little bigger than when it was new and it didn't want to come out of the hole in the block. hence term 'dogknotted' as when dogs get 'dogknotted' -don't want to come out either

runs like a new one ecxept now i found a crack in the rad tank on the drivers side and had to get a new tank and pull the rad out and put the new tank on .

I filed a complaint with the nhtsa and will call GM.

Hopefully, they will cover my vehicle.

not to mention a vehicle that is 6years old with over 110,000mi. Cracked radiator housing on drivers side can be caused by a stuck thermostat , when the thermostat suddenly fully opens and its very very cold out the plastic will crack. this happened to me.......

highly possible. plastic does not like a drastic temp change. only good thing is that the tanks are replacable without replacing the whole rad

There is a recall for 2001 model year trucks for the crankshaft sensor.

I'm trying to get them to cover my year truck which was built in 2001

Its worth a shot.

you are right about it being worth a shot . go get 'em let me know how you turned out . i might want a piece of them too as i already put mine in but i want restitution for the part cost through g.m. dealer plus my valuable labor costs. good luck with it.

I own a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban ¾ 4x4 with about 88,000 miles on it's 8.1 L engine it. About a week ago, I was driving down the road and it just shut off! No power! No power steering, no power brakes, no engine! Thank goodness I was not on a busy highway! A day later, it happened again! Fortunately, I was, again, not a busy road. I looked up the problem on the internet and suspected that it was the crankshaft position sensor. I also found out that there is a recall for 2001 Suburbans for this very part! I took it to the dealer and when they put in my VIN number, amazingly, my truck did not qualify for a free fix! I have to PAY $450 to fix this part that is obviously a problem! This part goes bad and you can DIE! And you never know when it will start going bad! WHEN will it shut down the first time? It's like Russian Roulette! We own 3 Chevys and will NEVER buy another one! I hope it was worth the $450 they made to lose a customer for life!

Note: If yours is not covered also, please call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236 and filed a complaint and they MIGHT include more VIN numbers.

Consequence
