Carfax confusion

Looking at a 96 accord

A CARFAX Vehicle History Report is based only on information supplied to CARFAX. CARFAX checked over 5 billion vehicle history events and found 9 record(s) for this 1996 HONDA ACCORD DX (1HGCD5525TA058047).

He says he is the third owner, and bought the car in 2003; he said he wasn't in the country in 1999 to buy the car.

I've heard of carfax being wrong. Is there any way to get more info? I'll obviously see if the title matches the description of the car, as well as checking the VIN number on the dash. Just passed inspection this past August.

96 accord 141,000 miles 5-speed.

Anything to be weary of? I'm taking it to a mechanic before I buy. Anything else I should ask or be aware of?

Thanks, Steve

Re: Carfax confusion

Hey Steve
Yes carfax is not 100%, however in this forum its not allowed to provide links for a proper answer along with asking for a Vin# to your question as it will be considered scam hooking you up with a detailed proper answer at some other website's

My suggestion is you post your question in< link removed by moderator >under buying and selling, you will get the answer your looking for as there are hundred's of questions and answers every hour

Sorry but Mr.Paulsen's reply is a little inaccurate. In this forum you are allowed to ask such question as Steve has. We do not allow for asking for Carfax checks because it is a violation of Carfax's Terms of Service, and our own Community Guidelines(which prohibit the use of copyrighted materials.)There are plenty of capable experienced members on this site who can give you the info you need when you ask a question. However as per the guidelines you are not allowed to advertise other sites similar to this or direct members to such sites, such as Mr. Paulsen has done.

Re: Carfax confusion

Is there a way to get the description of the car to make sure it matches with what I saw the other day?

Re: Carfax confusion

I doubt Carfax would have any of that information, neither would NY DMV. The only thing I could think of would be whatever insurance companies insured that vehicle over the years. I know many of them keep somewhat detailed records, but finding out which ones were the one could prove to be difficult. Then again if you DO find the company(ies) there's that little thing called "privacy" and they probably wouldn't give out any info. Short if hiring a private investigator, (which undoubtedly would be expensive,) you might find that they wouldn't be able to get much further than you.

Re: Carfax confusion

Thanks for the reply venturaowner. Any comment on the original question, which is why would the third owner not show up on Carfax? I'm just trying to ensure that this isn't a stolen car; that something fishy isn't going on.

Re: Carfax confusion

The only thing I can think of is that Carfax is only as good as the information it can retrieve from public records. If information is not reported or "mis-reported" aka inaccurate, then it can effect the outcome of the search that Carfax does to compile it's report for the consumer.Maybe the info wasn't reported or updated as it should have been.Have you tried to contact Carfax to report the inaccuracy? That would be a step to take to see of you can get any more info about the car.

Re: Carfax confusion

Thanks, I will certainly do that.

The guy selling the car says he bought it on 11/06/03, which is on the record, but isn't reported as a new title/owner. Since there are seemingly no records from the second owner buying it until the new registration and then the selling of the car, I'll have to ask carfax about it.
