1995 Park Avenue Fuel problem.
Hello all! I have a fuel problem with a 1995 Park Avenue that has me a little stumped. It is intermittent so has been hard to figure out. Sometimes the car will start other times it will not start. No fuel pressure, can't hear the fuel pump come on when it wont start. When it does start can hear the fuel pump and pressure is great. If it starts, it runs great, doesn't cut out, stall etc. We drove it about 100 miles non stop and not a problem.
Just got this car from my neighbor and its in great condition. Only 80k miles on it. I was her parents and it has been sitting for about a year with very little start time. She said the fuel pump was replaced not long before they got a new car and let this one sit. So part of me doesn't think its the fuel pump but you never know. Could the fuel pump relay give intermittent problems like this? Since it runs so well if it starts part of me thinks it is electrical to the fuel pump. Any help on where to start first would be greatly appreciated |

Re: 1995 Park Avenue Fuel problem.
Welcome to AF. Try another relay, that is easy enough for starters.

Re: 1995 Park Avenue Fuel problem.
I am with Max on the relay, if the engine is turning over and the fuel pump does not run. If not the relay, you need to check for voltage at the electrical connector near the tank. The grey wire should have 12v on it when the PCM commands the FP relay to energize.

Re: 1995 Park Avenue Fuel problem.
Put a new fuel pump relay in and it fired right up. 99.9% sure we got it fixed now.
Thanks for the tips! |

Re: 1995 Park Avenue Fuel problem.
Well I'm back to square one. Put the new relay in and thought all was well. Drove it to the store twice then the next morning it wouldn't start again.
Battery is new but wanted to get it checked so took it out and took it down to the shop and its fine. Put it back in and the car started right up. Went back out a couple hours later and it wouldn't start again. When its not starting they grey wire to the fuel pump is not getting power. I have a feeling this isn't going to be fun to figure out. |

Re: 1995 Park Avenue Fuel problem.
Check the wiring diagrams at autozone.com, repair guides and track down where the loss of 12v is coming from, start with the connections at the relay box.

Re: 1995 Park Avenue Fuel problem.
The grey wire will have 12 volts for just a couple seconds while the key is in the run position.
The grey wire will have 12 volts constantly while the key is held in the start position. How did you check it? Here's a couple free things that should be checked. 1 - Clean the battery cable connections. You need to remove the rubber boots to clean the cable ends. 2 - The fuel pump grounds at the driver's side ground bus. The ground is just as important as 12 volts going to the pump. Remove the metal bar from the bus & clean any corrosion from both the male & female terminals. Let us know what you find. |

Re: 1995 Park Avenue Fuel problem.
I have a 95 LeSabre that had a similar starting problem. The scan tool showed a passkey error and a vats error. Fuel cutoff (as shown by the scan tool) was active when when the engine would not start. After varying lengths of time, fuel cutoff was deactivated, and the engine would start.
The problem turned out to be the ecu. |
