Gas Mileage?
Hello Everyone I Bought a 2003 Ford Escape 3.0 With 94K Last Month
And I Like The Suv But The Gas Mileage Really Sucks Bad.. currently making 385 KM on a full Tank of gas... My Friend has got a 2002 Escape 114k 3.0 And doing 470Km on a tank So I Brought My Suv To The Mechanics Ran a Series Of Test With the Hand Held Comp for Diagnostics and it passed with Flying Colors Everything ok.... So The Mechanic Put a bottle of 88+ in the gas tank and some new Spark Plugs And after I drove For a few weeks I Am Still making the 385k per tank No more No Less.... Any Advice of what i should be doing next??? would be greatly appreciated it... |

Re: Gas Mileage?
I have a 03 escape with a 3.0 engine. I get about 27mpg on the highway and about 23mpg around town. I don't know how to convert that to km/gallon but maybe I can help. Tires can be a real problem. Are they the right size? Larger or smaller can loose gas milage. Fill the air in the tires to the max writen on the tire. This will keep them rounder.Use synthetic oil in the crankcase. I saw about 1-2mpg better with synthetic.

Re: Gas Mileage?
If I converted it correctly, you are getting 14 miles per gallon and your friend is getting 18 miles per gallon. (assuming 16 US gallons per tank fill-up).
Yep, that is pretty bad. Mine is a 3.0 automatic and gets 22 city/27 highway. From what you say about the car's condition - that leaves little else to blame other than a bad airflow sensor, clogged/dirty throttle body or dirty fuel injectors. Or like Carlos said, try spending less time with the foot on the gas pedal. You are losing 50% of your fuel economy somehow. Keep us posted on what you find out.

Re: Gas Mileage?
As a front end mechanic I suspect that your brakes are dragging or the front end is out of alignment. Camber and caster will not affect it but excessive toe in or toe out will cause the tires to drag and they will have a scalloping on the inside or outside edges.

Re: Gas Mileage?
yes tire chop could give you bad gas mileage but you would feel a vibration if it was to the point of losing milage

That is about 15 mpg for a typical fill-up of 15 gallons- ouch - I hope the alignment helps. Something is going on. Keep us posted.

Re: Gas Mileage?
Check your thermostat as the engine has to be up to correct temperature for the computer system to work.
