Reverse Stall

Hi,
I have a 92 Ford Taurus, and just recently it has started dieing when i put it in reverse. It doesn't die in drive or when i'm going down the road or at a stop sign. It only dies when i put it in reverse and it doesn't do this all the time, just once in a while. It'll start right back up and will die a few more times as i'm continueing to back up, but when i put it in drive it's just fine. Does anyone know why it would do this?

Which engine does your '92 have? Have you recently had service performed? What engine speed does the engine idle at in park?

There is a chance that you have a loose connection to the fuel injection or ignition system that, as the engine torques when placed in reverse, tugs at the connection and stalls the engine (or possibly shorts a bare spot in a wire to ground, stalling the engine). A brittle vacuum line or loose air intake tube could potentially be a source as well.

Or, if the idle speed is low, it could be a simple matter of needing to clean the throttle plate, idle air control, or EGR valve as well, but I would suspect you'd get similar results when shifting into drive if one of these items were the issue.
