9C1 speedometer swap
I've got the optional dash cluster with the extra goodies (like in the pic below) and am thinking about swapping it out for the 9C1 speedo. I know the standard cluster had the same wide speedo setup like the 9C1 speedo so I'm wondering, what is involved with doing this swap? From the speedo cable to the cluster itself. I know I'll also be losing the extra guages but would install their equivalent under the dash somehow, nothing fancy.
What I've got: ![]() 9C1 speedo: ![]() looks like somebody's swapped out the left vent for a temp guage, I wouldn't want to do that. |

Re: 9C1 speedometer swap
...somebody's got to know about swapping this out on here. It looks like I'll probaby need the bezel from a "wide" speedo car too. If I had the room for it I would just buy a 9C1 car for parts and tear it apart but I don't. I see the 9C1 speedo on eBay occasionally but don't want to buy it if it isn't going to work easily enough. I just hate the fact that my current speedo will only be useful for the first 6 or so seconds after I hit the gas.

Re: 9C1 speedometer swap
You will need the bezel you are correct. There may be som ewiring issues as well, for the idiot lights gas gauge etc. As far as will it fit. Yes it will. But I would recommend getting s factory service manual and studying the wiring diagrahms before starting or buying parts...

I've got the service manual, I'll look in there but don't remember seeing much on the 9C1 stuff in there...

If I'm not mistaken, the base level instrument cluster (with your certified speedometer head) should fit right in without other modifications - although you will loose your other gauges (such as volts, water temp or whatever those are). The 9C1 gauge trio will get those back for you.

You don't need to replace the cable, but more than likely it will need lubricated.
