Disaster Strikes!

Hi guys

Big f*** up today on my 1/9th scale Ducati

I was sanding out some dirt that coat trapped in 1 of the layers of clear coat, but as I was sanding I noticed that I was cutting into the basecoat. So I decided to sand smooth and respray the area. No problem yet! I masked all the surrounding decals and area and sparayed away. When I came to removing the masks 1 piece pulled 1 of the Ducati decals off with the clear coat also!!! I tried to rescue the decal be carfully peeling it off the masking tape but it just came off in bits so I had to scrape it! so now the bikes screwed basiclly. Does any1 know how I can get replacement decals for the kit. Its Revell Ducati 916sp 1/9th scale. By the way im in the uk so can I get the repalcement decals from within the uk? Also I used tamiya masking tape so kinda shocked it tore the decal off like it did.

Thks for any help u guys provide.

Re: Disaster Strikes!

If you can't get any replacement decals (I'd try that first) Then you may be able to print out the Ducati logo in the correct size using your inkjet printer.I did this myself on a Yamaha YZR500 kit when I ruined the tank decals. You can get the image from Brands of the World's site and print it out on clear decal paper. You need to seal the decal once printed and dry, then cut out and apply in the normal manner.

The best option would be a replacement sheet of decals though,if you can get one.But I haven't seen any in 1/9th scale.

Ive tried looking for repalcements but can't find any prob cos its such an odd scale but any hoo. Revell can provide i think but they want the manual and reciept and I don't have the recept or box anymore so no luck there plus I can't be asked to wait that long.

Where can I get decal paper from?

I haven't got an ink jet only a lazer so ill have to find a friend but to be honest I'm so desperate to finish the damn think im tempted to leave it.

Thks for ure help btw.

Re: Disaster Strikes!

Easy.

Just get them straight from Revell, and don't worry about it. Revell has a very good parts replacement service. I've used it several times, and they've certainly never required any kind of proof of purchase. Just send them a message and tell them what you need. You'll get a confirmation email saying they're working on it. They may ask you for a couple of quid to cover shipping and handling, and they may not (I've had it both ways)- if they do, their cost is very reasonable. It will likely take several weeks, so get on it- but if it's a current or recent production kit there should be no trouble at all.

As for printing decals, an inkjet isn't going to print white or silver markings. You'd have to find someone with an ALPS style printer. The replacement parts service is a much easier (and cheaper!) option

Re: Disaster Strikes!

Cheers Mpower

I have just sent the email to Revell so fingers crossed! I have already purchased the decal sheet but I can always use that in the future it was only a couple of quid plus I will use it if revell don't get back to me.

2 questions:

Considering that this kit was relaesed in 1998 is there a chance that revell will have the decals available?

Where the decal was removed there is a shallow area due to 3 layers of clear coat being torn off at the same time. How can I fix this I was going to sand it down but Ill only just cut through the basecoat. Can I layer it up using clear and then smooth it over or should I wait and reapply the decal then clear it after?

Thks

You can seal the logo with acrylic clear or with Microscale liquid decal film (you brush it on,it comes in a bottle.)

If you can't get any decals from Revell and you do end up making your own, when you cut it out don't cut into the printed area or the ink will run when you dip the decal into water. Also you may have to print the decal in a light grey colour as the inkjet can't print a true silver as MPWR correctly pointed out in his earlier post.

I think there is a slim chance they may still have decals.Especially if the kit is still in production?

For the repair of the damaged area,I would lightly sand it around the edges and dust another couple of coats of the basecoat over the area then re-clear the whole thing.

Good question....

Generally when I'm fixing chips, they go down to the primer at least (I'm fixing two chips this week, and I'm kinda kicking myself for not taking pics of each step). So the progression is sand, prime, sand, (repeat until perfect), repaint, reprime.

But since your chip obviously doesn't go down to the primer, it'd be nice to leave that base color unscathed, wouldn't it? I think I might be tempted to treat it like hiding decal edges with clearcoat- build up a layer or two of clearcoat and then sand the edges, further altering clearcoat and sanding until the edges are invisible.

What are you using for clearcoat?

Re: Disaster Strikes!

Ive been using Zero pre thinned clear

Well ive kinda sorted it now, I sanded it down with out cutting into the basecaot too much and resprayed the area and sanded the edges to match the surrounding area. I will clear the part tommorrow morning and see if it has fixed it. If and when I get the repalcement decals Ill apply on top of the clear coat and then clear over it again. Man the issue was a major f*** up today.

Don't u hate it when 1 little error ruins everything and what ever u do makes it worse!!!!

Well u live and learn!

Guys u have been great as usual!
