Re: 2005 Yukon Auto Headlight sensor replace

The only way to access the sunlight sensor is to remove, or partially remove the upper dash cover. To be able to do this, both of the A-pillar covers have to come off, both dash end covers come off (the left one has fuses behind it, the right one has a junction wiring block behind it). 2 phillips head screws behind the left and right dash end covers, both face vents on the passenger side need to be removed to access 2 phillips screws. The vents pry out of the dash with a small flat bladed screwdriver.

The passenger dash handle (above the airbag) has to be removed by pressing in on a white release button accessed through the holes once you remove the face vents. While pushing in on the button on one side, pull the handle towards you. It won't come all the way out. While holding one side, push the button on the other side and pull it towards you. It may take some work, but the handle will pull out. At this point, i would also recommend going to the underhood fuse block on the left (driver side) and removing the 15 amp airbag/srs/sir fuse for your safety. The trim cover on the driver side around the instrument panel/gauges has to be removed. Tilt the steering wheel down as far as it will go. Grasp the top of the trim cover and pull it towards you. When it comes loose, go around the perimeter of this cover and pull the rest of it out. It's a little tight pulling it out by the steering column, but it does come off.

Once that cover is off, there are 5-6 7mm head screws that need to be removed. Once these are removed, the dash cover is ready to come loose. Reach back inside the openings for the passenger face vents. Pull the dash cover towards you. There are several retaining clips that hold it in place, so a little force is necessary to pull it towards you. Once the passenger side is loose, pull the driver side of the cover out a little ways- the front of the dash cover near the windshield has six slots that slide into retainers to hold it down.

When you have it loose, lift up slightly on the front of the dash cover. You can see the under side of the sensor. I believe you rotate it clockwise to unseat it, and counter clockwise to lock the sunlight sensor into place. Be careful when working with the sunlight sensor, they have a tendency to separate at the midsection and cause problems/grief. Make sure that the new sensor operates correctly before you secure the dash pad down again.
