Scale question about wheels

Hi guys,

A quick question regarding scale.I just measured the rim diameter of some kit wheels (Fujimi Ferrari 599 rears) They measure 23.5mm which I have scaled up by multiplying by 24 (as the kit is 1/24th scale) so this equals 564mm.If I divide this by 25.4 (25.4mm = 1 inch) this comes out at 22.2 inches for the wheels on the real car.However I thought the Ferrari 599's rears were 20 inch.So in this case the wheels would be slightly oversize on the model.Are my calculations correct? Or do you work out the scale in another way?

The visible diameter of rims on a car is generally 1"-2" greater than the specified size; the wheel diameter is measured at the bead of the tire; the rest is the lip of the rim which holds the tire in place. That's why a properly sized 1/24 scale wheel will read 1 - 2 scale inches larger in diameter. That's why many wheels are visibly too small, because the kit designer didn't take the tire retaining portion of the rim into consideration. Your Ferrari wheel visually is the correct diameter, and often on a model a +1 combination looks more correct.

Go out to your 1:1 scale car and measure your wheel diameter to see what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the quick reply.I didn't know that the lip wasn't included in the measurement.You are absolutely right the 17 inch alloys on my 1:1 car are actually 18.5 inches when measured.Thank you for your help,much appreciated.
