coolant capacity

does anybody know what the total amount of coolant is supposed to be in a 98 w/3800 engine. I got a 4L jug of straight antifreeze and when mixed 50/50 ill have a total of 8 litres...im thinking thats not quite enough. I have a rad flush kit for the garden hose, is there a drain plug either than on the rad to get all the water out of the cooling jackets etc?

Re: coolant capacity

another thing....my abs/trac/SVS lights are on....but when i first start the car they are not...ihave to drive a few minutes for them to kick on. While backing up i hear this clicking noise behind the dash every time, and i hear the EXACT same noise at exactly the time the abs/trac/svs light turn on....is there some unit behind the dash im hearing? my obd2 scanner doesnt cover the abs portion of the ECM so i dont know why the light are on....

For the coolant, here is one procedure, but it doesnt say exactly how much to use.

For the ABS, I dont like the sound of things. The ABS does do a self-test when you first start moving, and its normal to hear "that noise" at about 5mph. The sound does sound like its coming from behind the dash, its actually coming from the module under the hood I believe. The only way to find out what the problem is, is to take it to the dealership and have them scan it, some mechanics also have the ability to scan for ABS codes. It needs to be a Tech II(dealer) or equivalent machine.

Smile Re: coolant capacity

Total system capacity is 12.3 qts with the 3800. I suggest draining at bottom of radiator and removing front knock sensor (center front of block) to get approx 9 qts out. (you will have to remove the wire harness 1st) The book suggests removing the back knock sensor also, but I don't know how that is possible with the trans attached to the engine!

I would drain once then refill and drain a couple times to dilute what remains to mostly water. Or if flushing, run flush additive up to temp and drain. Then add 100% strength antifreeze to get approx 66% mix. Follow the bleed process that is linked above, or else you can overheat.
