Help - Clunk noise when hitting bumps
When I hit a bump or uneven stretch of road, my teg will make a "bump" noise. Makes no difference turning, straight, etc. Low speed/High speed. I think my tie rod ends are gone and I don't have time to dig into it myself so I'm taking it to a shop. Who knows what they will tell me they want to fix for $$$. Any reasonable guesses on what might cause this. Yes boot are torn on CV but I hear once they are torn just to wait it out if you don't catch it immediately causes to replace the boots right you have to take the how shaft out. If it is the CV I really thought I'd get a much LOUDER noise which I'm not. It's noticeable but not extreme. Ideas/suggestions? Let them replace what?

Re: Help - Clunk noise when hitting bumps
tie rod ends are responsible for your turning if those are gone your front wheels will not stay in sync aka turn at the same time. sounds like u have a bushing or possibly a motor mount that is no good. check ur sway bar bushings those go out soon on all cars

Re: Help - Clunk noise when hitting bumps
My teg does the same thing...it sounds like it is coming from the right front wheel area. Not sure if we are talking about the same noise here but I am pretty sure mine is not CV's or mounts, I just had the tranny out a few months ago so I checked all the mounts even replaced one and I know the driveshafts arent that bad, just a little worn. Also have no reason to believe that tie rods are bad in any way. Front brakes are completely new, ball joints seem tight and bearings are nice and quiet. I would be interested to know what else it could possibly be.

Re: Help - Clunk noise when hitting bumps
Took the wheel off today. My CV shaft on the passenger side has the boot ripped in half. Grease everywhere. Deciding now whether to DIY or take it in. Anyone have some advice/instructions on CV shaft replacement?

Re: Help - Clunk noise when hitting bumps
I had to take off both driveshafts when I replaced my clutch and that was a real pain. First of all the lower ball joints were so stuck they were almost impossible to separate even with a heavy duty puller (pitman arm puller), and when I went to put them back in the splined ends that go into the hub were so tight I could barely get them back in. I actually damaged a boot putting one of them back and now it has split open and thrown grease everywhere. So I have to replace it or at least throw a new boot on it. If anyone has any suggestions as to how to get the splined end of the shaft back into the hub, please let me know. Anyway, in answer to your question, you can do it but if your car is anywhere as old as mine (I have a 91) it is not easy.

Re: Help - Clunk noise when hitting bumps
my teg made the sound...i think...i found out that the cv joint on my drivers side was busted at the joint closest to the tranny, replaced it... about a week later the sound came back, so i changed my sway bar end links, the end links that come stock are about a 1/4in thick (junk) bought a new set from "Energy Suspension" they are about 3/8 to a 1/2in thick, put those in and the problem was solved..
good luck |

Re: Help - Clunk noise when hitting bumps
Unfortunately a bump when you're going over a bump can be a ton of things. I run into a lot of Integras with this same complaint, and the most common thing i've seen is the upper trailing arm (or upper control arm as most call it) being bad. Other things to check would be the strut mounts, struts, sway bar mount bushings, sway bar links, springs, lower control arm bushings, or lower ball joints. Usually tie rod ends and CV shafts won't make noise when you're going over bumps unless they are REALLY bad, instead they'll make a clunking/thump when you turn. Just some things to look for if you're going to DIY, because that's what they'll be looking for if you take it somewhere.
Late answer, but hope it helps someone.
