High RPMs, clutch problem?
I have a '98 Saturn SC2 (5 speed) that I recently purchased a few months ago. I've done the basic things you do when you buy a car, change the fluids etc.
When I purchased the car, the only thing I was worried about is that the clutch didn't engange near the floor like most, instead it enganged towards the end of the stroke right before I took my foot off the pedal. So I was worried if the clutch needed replaced. Also, when I'm driving, no matter what gear I'm in, if I press the pedal down the RPMs go way up. In other words. If I put the pedal to the floor, the car would essentually just rev as it barely accelerated. Is this a problem with the clutch, or do I just need to replace the spring assem? Thanks |

Re: High RPMs, clutch problem?
From experience with my Saturn, it was the idle air control valve located on the throttle body.
I removed the entire throttle body and cleaned it out. Amazing build up. Taking the throttle body off and cleaning from the back side is the best. Requires removing 3 10mm bolts, electrical connections to the IACV anf TPS, acclerator cable, and vacuum lines. Not technical or physical exerting. Remove the IACV, taking care not to soak it in cleaner but gently wiping it clean with taking notice of the O ring in the hole and the spring on the inward side of this valve. Expect an over $100 labor bill if the shop does it. If you do it, get a throttle body gasket less than $5 that may not need replacement and a can of carb cleaner with an abundance of "rags". A toothbrush will come in handy. |

Re: High RPMs, clutch problem?
Do you mean when your actually in a gear and you put the gas pedal to the floor your rpms go way up??? If this is the case you will need to change the clutch. Your clutch is slipping, thats why your rpms go up when you are on the gas. How many kms on your car?

Re: High RPMs, clutch problem?
If your pushing down on the gas, and the rpms go all the way up, and your car doesn't accelerate much, then it's the clutch, i know someone who had the exact same problem.
...And if you want to take half an hour out of your time, you can remove the throttle body, and the EGR VALVE, and spray them down with some carb cleaner. It'll get all the carbon out, and will help the car run much better. My saturn had a problem with the throttle sticking, and making the car jump, cuz i'd let off the gas, and the throttle would be stuck, and rapidly close. So it's an easy, and quick thing to do. |
