HVAC fan

Well, lately I have had a few problems crop up with my beloved 01' Gran Prix.
I will start small and see if you can help here...

First, the hvac system stopped blowing air. I will assume it is the blower (130k on car), but have found two things hard to find.

In the past I always purchased the automakers repair manual for the vehicle, I have not been able to find this for the Gran Prix. I don't want those online subscription sites... I would like to have it in my hands. This leads me to number two... detailed information on removing the blower fan and replacing it.

TIA for any help.

Re: HVAC fan

welcome to AF cooolone2.

If your car has manual HVAC controls, and the blower motor itself isn't making bad noises, your blower resistor is the most likely culprit. It will start dropping the lower speeds first until you're left with only high. Finally high speed will fail too, as the blower relay is part of the resistor assy. If your car has the digital climate control HVAC, the motor is a more likely suspect. The blower module (this controls the fan speeds on the Auto HVAC system) is a much less failure prone part, although not failproof.

Re: HVAC fan

Yes, sorry, I will be more specific next time. I first noticed that the blower wasn't providing much air when I turned it on. It is manual controls and was the same through all speeds. Then I got noting at all. I do hear a click but no fan so I am leaning towards the blower motor itself. I will test the leads to the motor to see if I am getting any voltage at all there and that should isolate the problem. Thanks for the replies...

Now for problem #2...

I recently had a weird situation... My Trac light came on, meaning the PosiTraction wasn't working and shortly thereafter the ABS light as well.
I brought it to my mechanic and he said the computer codes indicated the bearing was shot. I thought this was a good diagnostic due to me replacing the other front bearing last year. I have 130+K on the car, 100 at the time of the other replacement.

Well he replaced the bearing and it took two days for the light to pop up again. At first it was intermitent for a day, then more and more persistant until it is now on at all times once again. The Mech. said he's getting weird codes now from the computer saying the wheels are rotating at different speeds? So this is setting off the lights. I almost reared someone the other day cause my ABS was not functioning properly... Outside of replacing the Bearing again (maybe defective) does anyone have an idea what may be going on?

TIA... Again.

Re: HVAC fan

On the ABS light issue, if you/he put a cheap white box off-brand Chinese made bearing on your car, then the hub could very well be bad (either the one you replaced a while ago or the one you just put on). Also, if he installed it using an impact wrench, or didn't torque it to the proper spec, this would also cause premature failure. On ABS sensor equipped hub bearings you get what you pay for, so stay with name brands.
