Possibly buying a 1995 eagle talon TSI that needs some work.

The guy who put up the listing said the timing chain/belt (which ever those motors use) jumped on it again and it wont run. He wants 1200 bucks for the car, he says he has over 3000 into it. I may go out and look at it, possibly talk him down if its not worth 1200. I plan on bringing it home and rebuilding the motor and tranny. The guy says the tranny is good but 138000 miles on it i would rather rebuild it while the car cant be used. Do any of you guys see problems with doing this? Id like the car to last me 3-5 years but some people say the eclipse/talon motors are junk and always break down. Since I would be rebuilding it with a friend I was wondering what all I could do to ensure against it jumping time or breaking down in the future.

By the way the reason im doing this is its already a 210 hp engine and gets nice gasmileage 20-23 city or somthing and 23-33 highway with the automatic tranny. My 07 grand prix was just totaled and I dont wanna go into debt again and not have any money left from my pay checks. Buying a car that needs a motor and or tranny and rebuilding it seems the way to go.

Truer words have never been spoken. The 4g63 can be a completely reliable motor if you treat it well. Any car that endures the abuse these cars do would be just as unreliable. Your car is living proof, the previous owner(s) neglected to change the timing belt and it broke.

If you are just going to use it as a daily get around car then I wouldnt both rebuilding the tranny unless it really needs it. Theres about 14 different ways you can go motor wise, what are you going to use the car for? Are you going to beat on it or just use it as a get around car?

If everything but the motor is in pretty good shape then thats not to bad of a deal. And with you rebuilding the motor you have a fresh start and wont have to worry about how much it was beaten on. So as long as you do a good job you should come out with a good cheap reliable car.

Im not gonna beat on it really. Im gonna use it as my daily driver, run it back and forth to work, 20 miles each way. Take it on trips ect. It should have enough power that I dont have to stomp the gas all the time lol.
