1998 5.0 stalls out

pickup acts like it runs out of gas but when you put gas in it it is full gas gauge is going haywire on it going back and forth from e to f will go short distance with no problems but go a mile or two farther and it quits.dont know if it is a fuel pump going bad or mabe something else.
